Diesel Technician III
Glimpse of the Job and Your Opportunity to Contribute
The Diesel Technician III is responsible for performing advanced maintenance and repairing operations on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment and demonstrates proficiency at diagnosing faults. This includes, but is not limited to, complex electrical repairs, CAN network diagnosis, and troubleshooting and programming various multiplex systems. The Diesel Technician III will direct work of other technicians, mechanics, and helpers.
Transportation Services will provide uniforms as well as all tools and safety equipment. This will be an hourly paid position beginning at $31.13/hour.
The work hours for this position are Monday - Friday from 1:00pm – 10:00pm.

Qualifications:
Required Education and Experience
+ High School graduation or any equivalent combination of education and experience
+ Five years of experience in repair and maintenance of heavy-duty vehicles or equipment or combination of vehicle maintenance and relevant workforce/school experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications
+ Must have a valid vehicle operator's license and good driving record.
+ Must be able to obtain State of Texas class "B" vehicle operator's license (Commercial driver License with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement) within 60 days of employment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Ability to utilize maintenance software, shop tools, and equipment.
+ Advanced working knowledge of engine and drivetrain components.
+ Advanced understanding of DC electrical troubleshooting.
+ Advanced understanding of CAN networks.
+ Advanced understanding of heavy-duty vehicle aftertreatment systems.
+ Advanced understanding of electrical/hybrid vehicle systems.
+ Ability to replace and program multiplex modules.
+ Ability to use diagnostic software to identify engine, aftertreatment, & transmission faults.
+ Fabrication skills including welding and operating a cutting torch.
+ Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Automotive/Diesel – Trade school.
+ Commercial vehicle operator’s license with passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement.
+ Seven or more ASE certifications or equivalent OEM certifications in related specialties.
+ Supervisory experience.
Responsibilities
+ Repair-Performs advanced repairs of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment including servicing, adjusting and repair of gasoline and diesel engines and all vehicle components. Replaces parts (ex. exhaust systems, batteries, belts, hoses, etc.). Repairs and replaces tires. Performs advanced repairs on heavy-duty aftertreatment systems. Installs and programs canceivers. Computer programming of multiplex modules and HVAC control modules.
+ Diagnostics- Uses diagnostic tools to identify and troubleshoot engine, transmission, and body controller issues. Troubleshoots complex problems related to engine performance, electrical systems, and more. Performs advanced electrical troubleshooting including drag tests, continuity checks, resistance checks, and amp draws using a DMM or oscilloscope. Troubleshoots complex HVAC related issues. Troubleshoots complex aftertreatment system issues.
+ Leader- Responsible for shift activities, staffing, and customer relations in the absence of the Vehicle Shop Supervisor. Assigns job tasks to students, mechanics, and other technicians. Ensures the safety of the shop to include, ensuring all mechanics are utilizing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. safety glasses and using all equipment properly.
+ Training- Provides on the job training to new employees, refresher training for current employees, and additional training for new unit processes or new industry processes. Responsible for mentoring new employees and training students on their job duties. Conducts shop safety training periodically. Responsible for training on diagnostic equipment to all Vehicle Maintenance employees.
+ Administration- Coordinates with the Vehicle Shop Supervisor on duty on scheduling work for the budgeted staff and students. Responsible for opening the shop each day to ensure the compressors and lighting are working properly, reviews work orders to be completed for the day, and is responsible for closing the shop each day to ensure the shop is secure.
Other Requirements and Factors
+ The selected candidate must have the ability to climb stairs, work in hot and cold weather conditions, lift and/or move moderate to heavy weight objects, stand for extended periods of time, lift, carry, stoop, kneel, climb, push, pull, and traverse frequently.
+ They must also be able to work Saturday home football games as needed.
+ This position will be covered by DOT regulations and be in a random drug and alcohol testing pool.
