BASIC FUNCTION:
This is important professional work involving responsibility for planning and overseeing dietary aspects of the food delivery system in the Capital Region BOCES Shared Food Service Programs. In addition, this position is responsible for the assessment of nutritional needs of students within the participating school districts of the programs. These employees are responsible for planning the provision of foods and drink appropriate for the physical and nutritional needs of the students within the participating school districts. The incumbents would provide nutrition education and counseling to adequately meet the requirements of the programs. The work is performed under general direction of the Director of Shared Food Service Programs (BOCES), with leeway allowed for exercise of independent professional judgment. Does related work as required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Develops and implements procedures for nutrition education, intervention, data collection and documentation in accordance with federal and state regulations and guidelines to ensure program effectiveness.
+ Develops and plans nutritional menus, which may involve researching new products to provide healthier menu choices.
+ Participates in federal, state, regional and local programs to keep abreast of new developments in the field of school nutrition.
+ Assesses nutritional needs of students within participating school districts by comparing dietary intake against standards for nutrition.
+ Advises Capital Region BOCES Shared Food Services administration regarding nutritional composition of foods available through vendors and community programs.
+ Functions as nutrition resource for school districts participating in the Shared Food Service Programs.
+ May advise on the purchase of food used in the participating school districts, as well as on safe and sanitary use of equipment in food service and preparation.
+ Prepares a variety of records and reports related to dietary activities for participating school districts.
+ Performs other related duties as required.
+ Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of dietetics and diet therapy.
+ Thorough knowledge of the relationship of nutrient intake to behavior of students in a school setting.
+ Thorough knowledge of federal, state and local dietary guidelines of food programs in an educational setting.
+ Thorough knowledge of processes involved in menu planning, food preparation and service, and ability to advise on organizing and directing these processes effectively, efficiently and economically.
+ Ability to assess nutritional needs and counsel populations relative to these needs.
+ Ability to keep accurate records and prepare analytical reports.
+ Ability to follow oral and written directions.
+ Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Job Qualifications
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with at least a Bachelor's Degree in dietetics or nutrition.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must be a New York State Certified Dietitian or Dietitian-Nutritionist and a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at time of appointment.
The selected applicant will be subject to a fingerprint supported criminal history background check in accordance with SAVE Legislation effective July 1, 2001.
Candidates will not have to take an exam for this title . This is a NY HELPS (Hiring Emergency Limited Placement Statewide) Program designated title. NY HELPS is a temporary program designed to help local government employers address current staffing issues. Traditionally, the titles filled under the NY HELPS Program required job candidates to compete in a competitive exam to be considered for employment. For the duration of the program, this title will be classified as non-competitive and categorized as a HELPS Program position. At the close of the program, this position will revert to competitive class status. Employees occupying positions filled through the HELPS Program will be granted competitive class status without the need to participate in a competitive exam.
