The Global Senior Advisor for Digital Safeguarding will develop policy, systems and protocols that enable the digital transformation of key initiatives engaging children such as World Vision's child sponsorship by ensuring the protection of children, community members, affected populations, and supporters from digital harm caused by World Vision’s programmes or people. They will create, launch and support a child-centred, best-in-class digital safeguarding approach for the World Vision (WV) Partnership. They will work to integrate safeguarding principles with World Vision’s digital products, ensuring that all solutions are safe by design. They will actively support Leadership at all levels to identify and mitigate existing and emerging risks, as well as explore opportunities in the digital space. This role will work cross-functionally, internationally, and will require a diverse, cross-cultural lens in addition to expertise in digital safeguarding, emerging technology and child protection. This role involves close collaboration with technical teams, including cybersecurity, to mitigate digital risks and ensure compliance with global data privacy standards.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Deepen WV’s digital safeguarding capacity
Work to shift the mindset across the organization to integrate a positive and consistent commitment to digital safeguarding in order to enable effective and safe digital engagement.Produce core guidance documents and tools for initiatives and programming that involve digital engagement with impacted communities.Develop organizational capacity to train staff and volunteers to ensure they are aware of digital safeguarding practices, focusing on online safety for children in sponsorship programs and other digital platforms.Support the continuous improvement of WV’s online safety learning programme for registered children in sponsorship programs and their caregivers, including child-friendly and caregiver-friendly methodologies, as well as sponsors.Develop and strengthen digital safeguarding capacity across the Partnership.Strengthen Support Office resources used to prevent online harm to children or supporters, prioritizing child sponsorship.Enhance WV’s learning programme and support system for Moderators (or anyone reviewing online content).Ensure Leadership understands their digital safeguarding capacity building gaps, including recommended investments.Strengthen WV’s strategic approach, including policy and guidelines, to prevent and respond to harm and risk of harm caused by WV’s digital engagement
Assess and revise relevant WV policy, guidelines and training programmes to strengthen WV’s ability to prevent and respond to digital harm caused by WV.Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to implement a robust digital safeguarding framework.In collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, craft WV’s digital safeguarding approach/framework, including setting standards and relevant tools for implementation.Ensure safeguarding measures are included from the initial stages of product design through to deployment and continuous improvement.Launch and support the implementation of WV’s digital safeguarding approach/framework.Establish a comprehensive digital safeguarding risk management practice, Partnership-wide
Working closely with cybersecurity and other key stakeholders, support Global Centre-level digital safeguarding risk management, including risk assessments. Develop digital safeguarding risk management guidance for Field Offices, Support Offices, and key initiatives such as the Global Sponsorship Initiative and Sponsorship 3.0, in alignment with World Vision’s Enterprise Risk Management practices. Additionally, support risk assessments on emerging technologies (AI, IoT) to prevent potential harm to vulnerable populations, aligning with World Vision’s Enterprise Risk Management and global data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, COPPA).Ensure digital safeguarding risks are efficiently and clearly communicated to and understood by Leadership to inform high-level, decision-making of digital concepts and products.Provide real-time advice to leadership on digital safeguarding issues.Support investigations of digital harm to children, adults, or supporters caused by WV people or programmes
Continuously improve WV’s investigation protocols and training to ensure they are capable of responding to digital harm.Actively support digital safeguarding investigations, upon request.Build the capacity of staff to support digital safeguarding investigations through training, coaching and on-the-job learning.Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to analyze data breaches or cyber threats that impact children’s safety and ensure alignment between safeguarding and digital security practices.Research and Learning
Stay updated on emerging risks and safeguarding solutions, particularly in AI ethics, algorithmic fairness, and cybersecurity.Pursue continuous learning on digital safeguarding issues to bring innovative methods and expertise to WV.Lead research and data analysis on digital safeguarding topics, sharing insights with internal stakeholders to influence decision-making and advocacy.Conduct and/or support research on child online safety or digital safeguarding in the development/humanitarian sector.Develop a system to monitor WV’s digital safeguarding efforts and identify areas for growth.Share research and learning, internally and externally including to donors as appropriate, to support internal decision-making and external advocacy that shape the digital safeguarding landscape and protects children from harmNetworking and External Engagement
Position World Vision as a global thought leader in the prevention of digital harm towards children, especially harm caused by the development/humanitarian sector.Represent World Vision in global forums on digital safeguarding.Develop, serve on, or advise colleagues engaging on Working Groups addressing the Digital Protection of Children and/or Digital Safeguarding within the sector.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Technical skills: protection of children from digital harm, generative AI, online safety, prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA), gender-based violence (GBV) and/or safeguarding.Experience working with secure software development processes, data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, COPPA), and cybersecurity frameworks.Experience working with mandatory government and regulatory reporting requirements around digital safeguarding matters, such as Child Sexual Abuse Material.7+ years’ experience digital safeguarding with a focus on protecting children from digital harm, PSEA, and GBV.Strong background in online safety, prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA), and safeguarding policies.Knowledge in digital product development, secure design principles (Software Development Life Cycle, privacy-by-design), and collaboration with IT and cybersecurity teams.Other: strong relationship building/network capacity, policy and guideline development, training design and facilitation skills, excellent communication skills, spiritual maturity in Christian faith, ability to influence, innovative, and proactive.Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required, but Masters degree preferred, in Information Technology, International Development, Child Rights or related field, or field/practical experience working with situations of digital safeguarding, emerging technology, information privacy, AI, and child protection.PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in AI ethics, cybersecurity, and data governance.Strong IT and knowledge management skills, including ability to learn new technology quickly.Ability to navigate complex technical environments and ensure safeguarding measures are embedded into product development lifecycles.Critical thinking skills to relate to work performed to broader business context.For positions filled in the United States, the typical salary range for this role is $90.000 USD to $120.000 USD. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, job level, internal equity and budget. Exact salary offers will be determined by factors such as the candidate's skills, qualifications, experience and geographic location.
