Posting Number S-3529 Position Number 70635 Type of Recruitment External Position Title DIGITIZATION SPECIALIST Position Summary Under the direction of the Clarke Historical Library’s Manager of Microfilm and Digital Services, the Digitization Specialist is a full-time, provisional position that is responsible for the production and image capture through microfilming and digitization of microfilm and a range of special collections materials including books, manuscripts, print newspapers, maps, images, and archives using scanners, digital and analog cameras, and various software. The Digitization Specialist follows best practices for image capture based on the condition of the material and the desired output and uses a high level of care, accuracy, and security. Required Qualifications Associate degree or equivalent completed coursework (60 semester credit hours).
Two years of relevant work experience.
Ability to evaluate one’s own work, anticipate/identify problems, and propose solutions.
Ability to organize and plan one’s own work to meet deadlines and productivity goals.
Demonstrated strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to be accurate and thorough in all aspects of work.
Ability to provide guidance and informal training to individuals in person and in writing.
Ability to lift up to forty pounds.
Ability to perform essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree.
Experience in graphic design, photography, information technology, and/or history is preferred.
Experience with either digital scanning or photography, especially large-scale projects.
Experience with computers that use Microsoft Windows operating system.
Experience performing library/archival scanning including meeting relevant library/archival standards.
Experience performing preservation microfilming meeting relevant library/archival standards, preferably using a Zeutschel system.
Experience with a DSLR or medium format camera, preferably a Phase One; experience with Capture One, Photoshop, or other image editing software.
Able to handle fragile materials carefully to prevent damage.
Demonstrated ability to maintain detailed records.
Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to shift priorities according to current needs. Duties & Responsibilities Performs microfilming and digitization including but not limited to the following tasks: Pre-capture tasks such as collation and dis-binding bound volumes.
Handles operation of microfilm camera. Final inspection of microfilm.
Scans microfilm or images captured with a digital camera. Digital file editing.
Moves edited RAW images to servers. OCR output.
Communicates promptly with the Digital Project Manager about issues that impact productivity goals and workflows.
Configures and assures optimal use of cameras (Phase One IXG medium format and Zeutschel OK 400).
Performs quality assurance for their own work’s accuracy, conducting fixes, and ensuring applicable standards have been met; may be asked to review other unit staff’s work for quality and accuracy as necessary.
Maintains complete and accurate records.
Trains unit staff in microfilming and digitization as necessary.
Assists in maintaining the tracking system for microfilm and digital deliverables and project- related files.
Prepares and tracks deliveries of microfilm to and from partner organizations and customers. Assists in developing delivery schedules.
Maintains Clarke microfilmed newspapers and customers’ newspaper and microfilm collections temporarily held by the Clarke.
