Description:Position Title: Dir, Laboratory Department: Laboratory Purpose: Assumes responsibility, authority, and accountability for all operations within the laboratories at Genesis Health System hospitals. Responsible for the management of human, fiscal, and material resources in accordance with hospital guidelines, organizational philosophies, and in compliance with regulatory and professional standards. It is the responsibility of the Laboratory Director to continuously interact and consult with the Laboratory Regional Director, Medical Director, Pathologists and local hospital administrators; generates strategies for improving operations through active participation in performance improvement philosophies; directs the recruitment and retention activities including interviewing, hiring, coaching, praising, counseling, evaluating and disciplining staff assigned to areas of responsibility; develops and monitors staffing levels to ensure appropriateness for the workload of the sections and shifts; completes competency evaluations for staff reporting to the director and oversees completion of competency evaluations for the remaining department staff; maintains excellent communication and collaboration with key physician groups and the medical staff structure; works collaboratively with hospital department leaders to ensure optimized patient experience as it relates to laboratory services; develops operating and capital budgets, monitors and analyzes performance and productivity and implements necessary corrective plans; utilizes budget information in management decision-making; seeks new methods and work flows to increase efficiency and improve cost effectiveness without compromising quality of service necessary for patient care; develops business plans and evaluates capital equipment needs with the Laboratory Regional Director, Laboratory Management and Medical Director; establishes and maintains quality control/ assurance systems appropriate to the area of responsibility and maintains compliance with requirements of regulatory and accrediting agencies; remains current with trends related to laboratory operations; directs the formulation and implementation of departmental goals and fiscal policies; participates with the Laboratory Regional Director in the development and implementation of marketing plans and participates in local, state, and national organizations to aid in short-term and long-range planning of health care services. Report To: Regional Laboratory Director Supervisory Responsibility: Large Group/Multi-Level: The job requires direct responsibility for a large department or unit of greater than 25 employees. In addition to staff, incumbent directly supervises one or more supervisors and/or assistant managers who assist incumbent with managerial responsibilities. Incumbent has multiple shift responsibilities for staff. Materials Responsibility: Very High: Work requires an extremely high degree of responsibility for materials resources. Examples of resources could include the operating and capital budget for the entire organization. The employee has extensive authority and control over these resources. The difficulty, variety and depth of problems associated with these material resources is extremely complex. Key Relationship: Co-workers/Health System Employees, Outside Agencies/Other Health Care Providers, General Public/Visitors/Volunteers, Physicians/Medical Office Staff, Students/Interns/Residents/Outside Instructors, Patients, Families, and Significant Others, Vendors/Clients, Auditors/Review Agencies POSITION SPECIFICATION Education: Bachelor's Degree Field Of Study: Science-related field. Special Training: Successful completion of a NAACLS or ABHES accredited clinical laboratory science program or alternate career path that meets certification eligibility requirements; five years of experience in clinical laboratory supervision. Training Preferred: Masters degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field. Licensure/Registration: Certification in one of the followg: Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) OR Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Medical Technologists (AMT). Valid driver/chauffeur license required, must meet MercyOnes Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, must be at least 18 years of age and be eligible to drive per Iowa state law. Experience: More than 5 years experience required. Interpersonal Skills: Interaction is with a variety of people inside or outside the organization. Communications are often difficult or stressful in nature. Contact with others involves complex, detailed and often sensitive topics. The job requires a high degree of interpersonal skills to deal with a range of complicated problem situations. Interactions involve earning the trust of children and adolescents, as well as an ability to communicate with them in a clear manner. Working Conditions: There is exposure to some undesirable or unpleasant environmental characteristics. The physical environment is generally safe and there is minimal health risk.
