Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital Department: Pharmacy - General Position is located: Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital Work Type: Full Time Hours Per Week: 40.00 Work Schedule: 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Summary: Responsible for planning, organizing and directing the overall operation of the Pharmacy Department for Northern Light – Maine Coast and Blue Hill Hospitals; ensures compliance with patient care quality standards as it relates to the care provided to all age groups of patients ranging from newborns to the elderly; directs and controls the purchase and inventory maintenance of pharmaceuticals and related substances and supplies; Leads the department’s planning and goal setting, revenue analysis, budgeting, education, competency and human resources activities; responsible for licensure of staff and department. Oversight of all regulatory related activities and compliance with accreditation standards. Responsibilities: + Works with hospital administration and the Northern Light Health Chief Pharmacy Officer on planning, organizing and directing pharmacy operations and ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal regulations. + Ensures that both sterile and non-sterile compounding procedures are adherent to United States Pharmacopeia standards. + Ensures robust diversion prevention and monitoring controls are in place across hospital facilities to maintain the safety and security of controlled substance medications. + Monitors activities of the Pharmacy Department and takes appropriate action as necessary to ensure efficient and effective operation. + Works closely with the nursing and medical staff and other clinical department managers in addressing pharmaceutical services issues as they are related to the services provided to all patients ranging from the newborn to the elderly. + Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. + Provides clinical pharmacy support services including discharge counseling, pharmacy to dose services, pain consults, etc. + Directs and controls the purchase and inventory maintenance of pharmaceuticals. + Oversees the storage and distribution of all pharmaceutical items in departmental and patient care locations. + Directs and participates in the development/revision, implementation and communication of policies, guidelines and standards for the Pharmaceutical Services Department in accordance with the hospital’s policies and Joint Commission standards. + Directs and participates in the human resources management function for the department by coordinating the selection, promotion, orientation, and performance appraisal processes. + Coordinates the department’s training and competency assessments where required. + Attends and participates on hospital and system-wide committees + Provides coverage as a staff pharmacist for the department, as necessary. + Prepares department budget for personnel, operating expenses, and capital equipment. Responsible for fiscal operation of the department. + Works in the community to bring positive attention to the effective patient care that the hospital provides. + Maintains a system of records in accordance with hospital policy for recording patient charges as well as maintaining adequate controls over requisitioning and dispensing of pharmaceuticals. + Maintains formularies, information resources and references for preparations. + Responsible for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of performance improvement activities assigned to the Pharmaceutical Services Department. + Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions. + Responds to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the hospital staff. + Effectively communicates information to management, medical staff, and hospital staff. + Ensure that the department environment is free from recognized hazards that create a risk of injury to healthcare workers, patients, and/or visitors. + In conjunction with chairperson of P & T committee, ensures that an appropriate program for Medication Use Evaluation, review of Adverse Drug Reactions, medication errors, and formulary management is maintained. + Support and facilitate open & non-punitive communication between healthcare workers, patients, and families regarding clinical and environmental safety on their unit and when interfacing with other units, groups, and individuals. + Support and facilitate employee and non-employee healthcare workers in reporting and directly addressing patient and environmental safety concerns. + Communicate effectively in both oral and written form, as appropriate for the needs of the audience. + Performs other duties as assigned or required. + Other Duties Other Information: Competencies and Skills + 5+ years of relative work experience required.• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Hospital Pharmacy, direct pharmacy leadership experience preferred + Achieves Results: Sets high standards for their own outcomes and seizes opportunities to engage others towards objectives.
