Summary:
The Director of Philanthropy is a highly skilled and experienced fundraiser to plan, organize and direct all aspects of fundraising and endeavors to support the strategic goals of Northern Light Mercy Hospital including major gifts, annual fund, planned giving capital giving, events and donor stewardship. The director will work closely with the president, leadership team, board of trustees and Foundation leadership on fundraising plans and endeavors to meet organizational goals and advance the mission of Northern Light Mercy Hospital and Northern Light Health. The Director manages fundraising staff, cultivates donor relationships, and implements comprehensive fundraising strategies to secure philanthropic financial resources for operational sustainability and programmatic growth.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
+ Develop and implement strategic fundraising plans aligned with the organization’s mission, vision, and goals.
+ Collaborate with the hospital president, leadership team and board of trustees to establish fundraising priorities and objectives.
+ Effectively support the president, leadership team and board members to engage in fundraising activities with the goal to raise fund and awareness about the mission critical need for community support.
+ Promote a culture of philanthropy across the organization; build philanthropic awareness through physicians, nurses, clinicians and support staff; and maintaining a presence throughout Mercy.
+ Provide leadership and strategies for ongoing and emerging fundraising initiatives that benefit Mercy Hospital’s mission and overarching with Northern Light Health system priorities.
Fundraising and Donor Relations
+ Develop, implement, evaluate and refine a comprehensive fundraising plan for Northern Light Mercy Hospital, including annual, special events, major and principal gifts, capital campaigns, corporate, foundation, and planned giving.
+ Manage a portfolio of approximately 100 to 125 major and principal gift donors and prospects, utilizing relationship and moves management strategies with a focus on $10,000 – $1 million plus donors.
+ Build and develop relationships utilizing moves management techniques, including tailored initiatives for principal and major gift prospects.
+ Work in a metrics-driven environment to achieve realistic and quantifiable goals based on mutually agreed upon fundraising targets that will be the primary performance standards used to measure fundraising success.
+ Oversee a grateful patient fundraising program to build a pipeline of donors, engage and train hospital leaders, physicians, nurses and clinical staff in the process.
+ Ensures that hospital maintains a consistent and robust pipeline of prospective donors and funding opportunities.
Resource Development
+ Oversee the planning and execution of annual giving campaigns, special events, a robust grateful patient program and donor stewardship program.
+ Manage and develop stewardship strategies for donors including McAuley Residence and Gary’s House donors.
+ Responsible for oversight, creation, and execution of signature fundraising events (i.e., McAuley Residence and Gary’s House events).
+ Work closely with Northern Light Home Care and Hospice philanthropy lead to identify, develop strategies and seek funding for this program within service areas.
+ Explore and implement innovative fundraising strategies to engage a variety of donor audiences (i.e. generational giving, digital fundraising).
+ Monitor and evaluate fundraising efforts to ensure revenue goals are met or exceeded.
Team Management and Collaboration
+ Provide strategic guidance and leadership to the Mercy’s fundraising team to achieve fundraising targets and objectives.
+ Supervise and mentor philanthropy staff.
+ Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment that encourages teamwork and professional growth.
+ Collaborate with Northern Light Health Marketing and Communications team to align fundraising efforts with organizational priorities and coordinated messaging, and in the creation of donor-focused collateral materials, annual appeals, campaigns, and special event print needs.
+ Provide leadership for hospital capital campaigns and oversee the development of case materials and proposal communications materials needed for major/principal gift and capital campaign fundraising.
Financial Oversight and Reporting
+ Develop and manage the departmental budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and transparency.
+ Provide regular contribution and fundraising reports to the hospital president, executive leadership and board members.
Advocacy and Community Engagement
+ Serve as an ambassador for the organization representing Northern Light Mercy Hospital and the Foundation at community events, conferences and forums.
+ Build and maintain high visibility and positive relationships with key stakeholders and community partners to enhance the organization’s visibility and impact.
+ Create business partnerships to engage and support Northern Light Mercy Hospital.
+ Work closely with Foundation’s Corporate and Foundation Specialists to coordinate corporate and grant funding opportunities.
Other Information:
+ Possess a current driver’s license and must have reliable vehicle for travel throughout the State of Maine.
+ Flexibility working occasional weekends, evenings, or holidays.
+ Demonstrated experience with donor cultivation, program management, and solicitation. Work effectively with all levels of management, staff, volunteers and major donors.
+ Strong interpersonal skills and public speaking skills are expected.
+ Intellectual curiosity, creativity, and strategic thinking abilities; strong management capabilities.
Competencies and Skills
+ 5+ years of relative work experience required.5-7 years’ experience in development or related field with demonstrated success in leadership and major gift giving solicitation.

Education
+ Required: Bachelor’s degree or higher; Degree in administration, healthcare, business or a comparable educational and professional background will be helpful to this assignment.
