Dir Sr, Tax
This is a hybrid job and will require you to work a few days a week in Denver, Colorado office. GCI's Dir Sr, Tax is responsible for managing and maintaining the Company’s tax strategy and cash taxes, tax accounting, tax compliance and tax operations functions. Oversee Tax Manager and ensure income tax provision, disclosure elements of financial statements and income tax returns are accurate and complete. Provide transaction tax compliance support as needed. Support key corporate projects, identify hidden areas of potential income tax savings and opportunities and perform income tax planning. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AT ALL LEVELS: This leadership position requires the following non-delegable responsibilities: + Fully own the mission, goals, operations, and results of the team and areas of responsibility. + Provide strong leadership to span of control (direct and indirect reports); demonstrate effective leadership in all interactions companywide. A strong desire to succeed is expected. + Ability to work independently and in collaboration with the Chief Accounting Officer, Controller, external auditors, legal counsel, and as a team member with others at varying levels in the Company. + Ability to accurately read, write, and respond to routine business correspondence such as emails, chat messages, policies, procedures, reports. + Ability to accurately communicate information virtually (i.e., Teams), over the phone, and in-person in a clear and concise manner to a range of audiences. + Detail oriented but also able to see the big picture. + Experience in the preparation of consolidated federal and state income tax provisions required; preparation of such provisions in a complex accounting environment preferred. + Knowledge of GAAP as it applies to income tax provision preparation required. + Experience in the preparation of multiple entity consolidated federal and state income tax returns required. + Experience in the preparation of partnership income tax returns required. + Experience processing income tax returns using CorpTax software preferred. + CHANGE MANAGEMENT: champions and supports department and company change. + DECISION MAKING: uses sound, logical judgment based on data, research, and experience to choose an appropriate course of action. + PLANNING & IMPLEMENTATION: analyzes workload and establishes appropriate priorities; sets measurable and achievable goals and objectives for the team. + MENTORING & DEVELOPMENT: utilizes interpersonal skills to guide, direct, and influence others to achieve results. + PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT: sets clear performance expectations for team. + Establishing the vision and tone for the department, consistent with company culture and mission. + Establishing clear, measurable, and achievable goals and performance expectations and following up appropriately. + Hiring individuals who can accomplish those goals and meet those expectations; providing them the open communication, training, tools, and mentoring needed to be successful and develop professionally; establishing a development path commensurate with capabilities and potential. + Providing clear and accurate feedback to individuals and teams on a timely and consistent basis. Identifying and addressing performance problems early and effectively before they damage GCI’s interests and demoralize other employees. + Effectively managing processes including annual performance reviews, compensation adjustments, promotions, demotions, transfers, and disciplinary actions up to and including termination in an unbiased and consistent manner. This is a senior level position functioning as the subject matter expert (SME) requiring demonstrated advanced proficiency in all areas of responsibility and specialized knowledge. Performs most complex tasks with little to no assistance, anticipating and preventing problems and roadblocks before they occur. Works under minimal to no supervision with considerable latitude for independent judgment. Preparation and review of financial statement tax provision and disclosures including the ability to identify, research, resolve, and document issues related to tax positions taken in the provision. Coordinate the preparation and review of Company’s federal and state income tax returns with external accounting firms and perform detailed review of such tax returns. Support with ongoing IRS and State tax audit of the Company’s income tax returns, including providing explanations of the Company’s tax positions to the tax authorities. Supervise external tax advisors. Implement tax strategies and planning for the Company and its subsidiaries with a focus on managing cash taxes. Assist CFO and CAO with tax diligence and structuring of potential acquisitions by the Company. Consult, communicate, and supervise external tax advisors, including national law firms, and big four accounting firms Tax research, tax planning, and review of current tax compliance regulations. Implement, coordinate, and communicate tax policies and procedures for the Company. Preparation and review of long-term forecasts of the Company’s federal and state income tax liabilities and other special projects as assigned. Responsible for navigating the sales tax compliance processes, and ability to identify and implement tax saving opportunities related to CapEx expenditures, including tax exemptions, rebates, and credits. Consultation with a separate group regarding non-income tax compliance (property tax, Washington B&O tax, universal service fund surcharge, etc.) as needed. Internal Control Considerations: Oracle General Ledger inquiry-only profile. Super user of Corp Tax software. General approval authorization up to $150,000. Support the VP & CAO to ensure the company is in compliance with all federal and state income tax rules and regulations. Minimum Qualifications: Required: *A combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis + High School diploma or equivalent. + Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field. + Minimum of fifteen (15) years progressively responsible income tax compliance or public accounting experience. * + Including a minimum of five (5) years in a supervisory or management position managing a staff of two or more professionals. * CPA firm experience in a relevant accounting role may substitute for tax accounting experience up to a two for one year basis. Preferred: + Certified Public Accountant (CPA). + Public accounting and/or experience with a U.S. public reporting company. + Master’s degree in taxation. + Telecommunications experience. + Relevant telecom industry or job specific certifications. DRIVING REQUIREMENTS: + This position may require access to reliable transportation for occasional travel between retail store locations, offices, worksites, or other locations as needed. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS: + Work is primarily sedentary, requiring daily routine computer usage. + Ability to work shifts as assigned, work in standard office/home office setting, and operate standard office equipment. + Ability to accurately communicate information and ideas to others effectively. + Physical agility and effort sufficient to perform job duties safely and effectively. + Ability to make valid judgments and decisions. + Available to work additional time on weekends, holidays, before or after normal work hours when necessary. + Must work well in a team environment and be able to work with a diverse group of people and customers. + Virtual workers must comply with remote work policies and agreements.
