Director, Accounting – Digital Capability Management (AFS)

This position will have 5 direct reports and provide the strategy and thought leadership for our Digital Workforce Enablement (DWE) program, evaluate opportunities on how Controllership can leverage the latest technologies available, and oversee the usage and implementation of process mining capabilities. Finally, this role will lead and set the future strategy for our Customer Centricity work (task mining, customer journey mapping, etc.).

The ideal candidate will:

Have a foundational knowledge of the tools & capabilities currently included in the DWE program (Power Apps, Power Query, RPA, Gen AI, etc.)Be a supportive, engaging leader who collaborates with the team to set the strategic vision for the DWE programWork across Controllership and Finance to identify and develop innovative solutions that address high-priority challenges and enhance operational efficienciesBe a champion for the DWE and Customer Centricity programs and benefits they provide to associates and the organization; Promote digital solutions and help cultivate a culture of continuous learning and upskilling

This is a hybrid position located in Columbus Ohio and you will be required to come into the office two days per week. 

This role does not qualify for employer sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the STEM OPT extension program.

As a Director, you'll build and maintain product/business unit accounting policies, practices and standards to meet regulatory and management requirements. We'll count on you to directs recording, consolidation, arrangement, reporting and preservation of all financial data. In addition, you'll have opportunities to provide accounting consultation, assistance and service to leaders and other internal customers.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Directs the accounting, preparation, analysis and required filing of all relative financial statements and related data and exhibits for internal and external sources.

Reviews, advises, counsels and participates actively concerning new systems developments and other systems related matters to ensure accuracy of all financial data.

Manages special projects/assignments as advised by senior management.

Provides advice, counsel and assistance on accounting policies and practices.

Responds to applicable inquiries from state insurance departments, internal and external auditors and other regulatory agencies. Provides financial information to various Nationwide offices to support other filing, analysis and reporting requirements.

Directs the preparation of special reports, analyses and financials as requested by management and external agencies.

Represents officer/executive as assigned. May attend trade association meetings as Company representative.

Directs associate management, including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organizational planning, hiring and placement and disciplinary actions.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Accounting Officer/Executive; Manages a team of 4 or more accounting professionals.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree in accounting or finance preferred. Post-graduate level degree desired.

License/Certification/Designation: Progress towards CPA preferred.

Experience: Eight or more years of related accounting experience; insurance experience preferred. People management experience preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: GAAP and/or STAT accounting, tax and systems principles. Insurance accounting principles, practices and procedures. Insurance regulatory requirements. Management policies, practices and procedures. Sophisticated verbal and written communication skills for contact with all levels of associates including business unit leadership, external parties such as public accountants, state examiners, industry professionals, and other clients. Ability to analyze and solve accounting problems, interpret financial documents and data, analyze legal requirements, examine and monitor accounting cycles and flows, and review general ledger entries and audit work papers and schedules. Ability to lead associates in all aspects of assigned accounting record maintenance, financial statement preparation, and special projects.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Working Conditions: Normal working conditions. Ability to work outside of the normal work day, including occasional weekends, to meet deadlines and complete special projects and handle a high volume/large variety of work.
