Job Description
Thank you for your interest in employment with AbbVie; this role is based out of our Global Procurement Hub in North Chicago IL via hybrid onsite 3 days per week. Remote is not available for this opening.
As a key member of the R&D Procurement function this role provides category leadership and management oversight for Discovery and Research categories supporting R&D. Demonstrated category expertise in R&D, specifically in Discovery, Research or any related categories is required for this role.
The Director Category Management will have a unique opportunity to build and shape the global procurement organization, TRANSFORMING it into a best-in-class professional procurement organization in terms of performance, structure, processes, and team member development. Demonstrated category expertise in R&D – this would span all phases of the process: discovery, pre-clinical and clinical, etc. is a plus.
Reports to: Vice President of R&D Procurement
Direct reports: Global Category Managers within group
Primary accountabilities:
+ Provide single point of accountability to Vice President R&D and to CPO for early development R&D categories, providing overall group strategy and alignment on goals with internal customers and procurement leadership.
+ Lead Global Category Managers to ensure development of global category strategies that drive ongoing value, continuous improvement and comply with global procurement policies, processes, and tools.
+ Serve as a thought partner to Global Category Managers to ensure their category strategies are complete, rigorous and will satisfy customer needs.
+ Solicit business unit input to ensure internal customer satisfaction with the performance of category procurement teams and take action on areas for improvement.
Metrics and performance indicators:
+ Category Management Plan and Execution supporting the portfolio
+ Delivery of People, Process, Governance and Value delivery goals.
+ Meet agreed-upon operational budget for procurement.
+ Meet or exceed agreed-upon service level expectations.
+ Supplier performance – at or above expectation across balanced scorecard.
+ Organizational and employee development.

Qualifications
+ Global Leadership Strategic Sourcing & Procurement
+ Procurement experience: 8+ years; Pharma industry experience: 5 + years preferred.
+ Overall portfolio of experience in R&D areas will be considered.
+ Demonstrated expertise in R&D Procurement in pharmaceutical or life sciences.
+ Bachelor's degree required; concentration in sciences, business, finance, supply chain, materials mgmt., or engineering is desirable.
+ MBA or relevant MS degree preferred.
+ Professional certification in purchasing, supply chain or six-sigma is desirable,
+ Proven leadership capabilities and strategic thinking, strong interpersonal skills including cross-functional teamwork, and written and oral communication skills, strong negotiation skills, exceptional analytical skills, strong multi-cultural skills, high energy level, and a bias towards action.
+ Sensitivity to the cultural diversity of a global organization
+ Proven ability to lead and motivate a team of professional procurement staff.
+ Ability to draw strategic insights from analysis and effectively summarize and present insights.
+ Ability to quantify financial benefits for identified opportunities and initiatives
+ Familiarity with specific category group goods and services
+ Familiarity with Procurement systems such as SAP, Ariba is preferred.
+ Solid understanding of procurement best practices.
+ Understanding of international business and contract law
+ Previous experience with transformation initiatives and change management process preferred.
+ MS office skilled (e.g., excel and power point).

Salary: $151,500 - $288,000
