As the Director, Client Tax Advisory you will contribute to the overall success of the Client Tax Operations & Advisory Centre of Excellence (Tax COE) in Canada, cultivating an inclusive environment that encourages cross-functional collaboration within the organization to deliver exceptional results to clients. You will lead a high performing team in providing tax planning & advisory to the various business units within Scotia Global Wealth Management and Global Banking & Markets.
**Is this role right for you? In this role you will:**
+ Lead a team of tax professionals and operation specialists, overseeing domestic and international tax reporting and compliance
+ Spearhead tax advisory and planning for all asset management product initiatives, engaging with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment and optimal outcomes throughout the product cycle
+ Act as a tax advisor to senior investment team and portfolio managers, supporting tax advisory and review of complex investments for the funds, including conducting tax due diligence of underlying issuer, leading tax calls, identifying related Canadian and foreign tax risks, negotiating tax side letter provisions and implementing reporting procedures to comply with Canadian reporting obligations
+ Develop and/or guide tax and operating policies/procedures to ensure adherence to complex and evolving domestic and foreign tax regulations
+ Maintain effective relationships with external stakeholders including auditors, tax regulators, and key vendors
+ Participate as a member of relevant industry associations and foster knowledge sharing across organizations sector regarding tax regulatory changes affecting the business and operational practices
+ Manage tax audit engagements conducted by the CRA, IRS and/or other applicable tax regulatory bodies
+ Collaborate closely with product marketing and national sales team to create tax content for sales initiatives, and advisor/client brochures
+ Review and/or draft relevant tax disclosures for the investment funds prospectus, offering memorandum and other similar documents
+ Provide advisory relating to reporting & governance framework required to ensure ongoing operational compliance of CRA regulations, FATCA, CRS, IRS (QI, US filing) and other applicable regulatory tax requirements
+ Provide interpretation of regulation (CRA, IRS, QI, FTT) and guidance/support to operations and business units on client concerns, system enhancements, testing requirements and stress testing
+ Assist in design, process Improvement and best practices as it pertains to Regulatory Reporting to relevant tax authorities
+ Review withholding requirements, tax form completeness and filing QA in conjunction with Global Taxation to ensure the bank is compliant and prevent undue liability
**Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? – We’d love to work with you if you have:**
+ CPA designation and Completion of CPA In-Depth Tax Program is required
+ A minimum of 8+ years’ experience in the tax practice of a public accounting firm or equivalent industry experience
+ Solid foundation in domestic and international taxation affecting Canadian investment funds and financial products
+ Strong knowledge of FATCA, CRS and Qualified Intermediary (QI) compliance and related reporting requirements
+ Proficiency in GST/QST/HST compliance and reporting relevant to investment products
+ An ability to be proactive and adaptable to effectively manage and lead in a fast-paced, evolving setting, while ensuring operational effectiveness and fostering strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
+ Deep knowledge and understanding of the nuances and complexities of tax regulations, compliance requirements and potential tax risks
+ An ability to navigate the intricate landscape of domestic and international tax laws effectively and integrate its elements within an operations context
+ Skilled in tax advisory, due diligence and structuring for a wide range of investment vehicles, including alternative funds, hedge funds, exchange traded funds, and private funds
