The Director of Communications (Work & Jobs) is responsible for coordinating and integrating multi-channel external communications that align with AARP’s strategic programming in Work & Jobs and Disparities. This role involves leading a small team of AARP staff and collaborating closely with various departments, including Programs, Campaigns, Content, and Marketing, to create and execute outreach strategies for work and jobs initiatives. The director will oversee the implementation of these plans and assess their effectiveness. This position reports directly to the Vice President of Communications. Responsibilities Develops strategies for capturing and sharing stories that reflect the organization’s work. Reviews and edit stories and supervises the storytelling process. Edits and reviews content and final communications materials. Develops strategies and project plans to promote content across various platforms. Provides strategic guidance on media campaigns that drive awareness of and engagement with the organization and its mission. Collaborates with External Relations or other teams as necessary on press releases, briefing memos, media lists, and other items. Prepares staff and leadership for media interviews. Collaborates with internal stakeholders to integrate organization news, leadership, and programs into enterprise communications and maintain a consistent brand. Mentors and develops staff using a supportive and collaborative approach. Qualifications A Bachelor’s Degree in communications, public relations, or a related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred. Candidates should have 10+ years of professional experience in crafting communications and public relations strategies for diverse clients. Proven experience in leading communications teams effectively. Familiarity with issues related to the aging workforce and employment. Experience in budget management and navigating a matrix management environment. Strong orientation towards client service, along with solid project management and account management abilities. Ability to understand and operate within organizational politics, networks, and matrix management systems. Excellent interpersonal skills, including collaboration, active listening, negotiation, facilitation, conflict management, and adaptability. Outstanding writing and oral communication skills are essential. AARP will not sponsor an employment visa for this position at this time. Additional Requirements Regular and reliable job attendance. Hybrid Work Environment AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.
