Description
About Graham’s Youth and Family Center at 1946 Webster Avenue
Graham’s Youth and Family Center is in the Tremont/Fordham neighborhood of the Bronx. Originally a program hub for staff and families receiving specific Graham services, the Center is actively evolving into a gathering place where community members can come for support, information, resources, and opportunities for learning. The Center uses a Co–Design approach, which involves multiple stakeholders in the design and development of activities and offerings relevant, effective, and satisfying to the people who partake.
Graham intends the Center to promote individual, family and community wellbeing, strengthen family thriving factors, build community connections, capacity and resilience, and amplify community leadership. The Center’s supports, services and offerings will draw from existing and developing Graham programs and through referrals to respected partners.
About Graham
Graham provides innovative and life-changing support for children, young adults, and families who face some of the most difficult obstacles caused by poverty, racial injustice, and lack of access to educational opportunities, living wage employment, quality healthcare, and affordable housing.
We collaborate with communities and strong partners to create and implement strategies so everyone can lead healthy, joyful, and successful lives.
With over 500 full-time, part-time, and on-call employees serving children and families in multiple programs and centers throughout Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn, Graham provides an exciting & enriching work experience.
Position Summary:
The Director for Community Support and Leadership is a new role at Graham. The position has been created to drive and influence the evolution of the 1956 Webster Avenue space from one primarily experienced as an ‘office’ providing case management and other services, to one that is open to providing a range of structured and unstructured supports and offerings, many of which will be co-designed by the community (including staff, children and youth, families, individuals and partners) who make use of the Center.
Community: The Director leads in creating and sustaining a warm, nurturing physical and emotional environment welcoming to the community and staff. The Director seeks out opportunities to foster a spirit of community amongst all who partake in or provide activities and services including parents of children in foster care, kinship, foster and adoptive parents, Graham SLAM youth - including young adults who were previously in foster care and those who are parents, families engaged in Graham’s Family Support & Empowerment Programs (FSEP, ACS Preventive) families receiving other supports including mental health and Health Homes care management, families from the local Tremont/Fordham neighborhood, and Graham Staff. The Director will cultivate relationships with local community boards, committees, community partners and other stakeholders and build relationships with local faith-based groups and business associations. Whenever possible the Director will coach community members on effective civic participation.
Radical Listening : The Director actively seeks out opportunities to listen to the entire Center community, emphasizing listening without judgement and amplifying and learning from often un-heard or unacknowledged voices on issues that are important to them. The Director honors that families and community members are experts in their own lives, centering their voices in shaping all that takes place at the Center. The Director provides opportunities for radical listening through facilitating group sessions including Network Support Groups for Family Advocates ( Graham staff with lived child-welfare involvement experiences working as Family Advocates/Family Coaches to support others who are navigating the system); The Parenting Journey, a trademarked experiential curriculum which engages insightful conversations while building networks of support among community members, and peer support groups for Graham staff.
Co-Design : The Director will work with community members, external partners and the other Graham programs and services at 1946 Webster to co-design offerings, support and services that respond to community and staff needs, and to co-create accessible, well-ordered, and welcoming spaces on the 1stfloor and lower level for community members and for Graham staff. The Director will work with community members, external partners and the other Graham programs and services at 1946 Webster to co-design offerings, support and services that respond to community and staff needs.
Helpful Help : The Director will launch and sustain a range of concrete supports at the Webster Youth and Family Center including: replicatingMs. Millie’s Closet, an initiative launched by Hunts Point community member Ms. Millie, which focuses on ‘donations with dignity’ - enabling community to give and receive essential clothing and other items; making available the Cabrini Essential Needs Fund to financially support families on issues ranging from rental arrears to overdue bills, food, and other life challenges; and seek out trusted community partners who can help with housing, addiction, mental health, employment, etc.
Undoing : The Director, along with Graham’s Senior Leadership and Anti-Black Racism Committee is committed to Graham’s Anti-Black Racist policies and practices which are committed to transforming racist and oppressive systems. The Director recognizes that many Black, Brown, and poor families have experienced child welfare, education, healthcare, and other systems as parts of a family regulation system that conducts surveillance and traumatizes and separates families. The Director supports families without discrimination, coercion, and harmful system practices, co-creating offerings, support and services and embracing language and attitudes which fully support these values.
