The Director of Education Administration will report to the Senior Vice President for Education (SVPE), DFCI.  The Director has direct responsibility for the administrative leadership, strategic planning, operating results, and regulatory alignment of the DFCI’s education programs. The Director will establish and supervise the DFCI Education Office (EO).  The scope includes student education (UME), post-graduate medical training (GME), faculty development, and collaboratively with the Administrative Director of Continuing Professional Development - continuing medical education (CME); the Director will also work collaboratively with educators in separate DCFI domains, including education of nurses, advanced practice providers and post-doctoral scientists.

Responsibilities

Leadership of Office of Education:

Along with the SVPE, determines the overall direction, goals, tactics, and objectives for education administration. Works with departmental leadership to establish and achieve goals that are aligned with the vision, strategic plans, and goals of the DFCI.Manage and direct an EO staff, resourced to achieve the DFCI education mission.Along with the SVPE, establish and measure relevant institutional metrics of educational success. Ensures healthy and collaborative relationships among the faculty and staff educators and trainees at DFCI.Provides effective, clear, and precise methods of communicating with departmental leaders, faculty, and staff on a regular basis.Continuously assesses and improves the efficiency of systems and processes within each area under the Director’s purview. Develops and launches new strategic initiatives and serves as the administrative project leader for new DFCI educational initiatives.Participates in design and implementation of changes to training programs. Sets and tracks benchmark goals for the education programs within DFCI and affiliate institutions, ensuring all goals are met.Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the changing health care education environment, including monitoring and adhering to ACCME, ACGME and other relevant accreditation organizations 

 

Accreditation of Education Programs

ACGME

Work with the SVPE to establish and maintain DFCI institutional accreditation, including creating and updating relevant policies and procedures.Work with existing and future residency and fellowship directors to achieve and maintain program accreditation, as determined by the SVPE and the DFCI CEO and Board priorities.

ACCME

Work with the Administrative Director of Continuing Professional Development and the SVPE to establish and maintain DFCI institutional accreditation, including creating and updating relevant policies and procedures for staff who will coordinate a global program of CPD and CME activities, as determined by the SVPE and the DFCI CEO and Board priorities.Work with the Administrative Director of Continuing Professional Development to supervise administrative staff assigned the responsibility to create and maintain the infrastructure to deliver all aspects of DFCI-driven externally facing educational platform (DFCI-branded “Cancer Education Home”), including strategic direction, budgetary planning, curricular content development, and learning management systems operation (content delivery platform).

 

 

Manages a variety of Education Programs

Continuously interfaces and coordinates with the SVPE and other key and relevant educational and administrative leaders.

Ensures DFCI administrative leadership supports and maintains representation on all relevant education administration committees, as assigned.

Oversee the supervision of specific DFCI education domains, including:

 

Medical Student Education

Holds responsibility for the coordination of all DFCI-related HMS courses, including the Practice of Medicine (POM), oncology electives and other DFCI-based teaching.  Supervises administrators who oversee student rotations.

 

Residency and Fellowship Programs: Holds responsibility for the coordination of all DFCI post-graduate training programs, including establishing independent residencies (e.g., radiation-oncology, transitional year) and fellowships (e.g., adult oncology, pediatric oncology, hematology, psychosocial oncology and palliative care), and others as directed by the DFCI CEO and Board priorities.  By overseeing the residency and fellowship program’s individual administrative staffs, the Director via program coordinators will be responsible for:

Communicates with GME constituents (GME Office, department, faculty, residents/fellows, ACGME, ABMS specialty board) on a regular basis or as needed.Maintains understanding of and oversees ACGME policies and procedures, including preparation for site visits and other required administrative filings.Interprets ACGME requirements, DFCI policies and procedures, and other policies as applicable, and develops compliant program policies and procedures.Acts as liaison between the PD and internal and external stakeholders.Ensures adherence to the program’s policies and procedures, including trainee recruitment, on-boarding appointments, orientation, trainee file maintenance, scheduling, individual and annual program evaluations, duty hours and family leave.Coordinate the regular meetings of the DFCI Education Committee.

 

Continuing Medical Education

Along with the SVPE, will create a job description for an Administrative Director of Continuing Professional Development, who will also report to the SVPE and will work collaboratively with the Director to oversee ACCME accreditation and meeting DFCI strategic goals in the domains local, national, and international CME, CNE and other professional programing.

 

Educational Affiliation Agreements

Along with the SVPE and residency and fellowship PDs, establish a method for and track updated affiliation agreements with all collaborating hospitals.  

 

Finance

Along with the SVPE, responsible for cost center fiscal management of all areas of responsibility, including managing to a margin. Establishes and achieves financial goals and measures. Prepares an annual DFCI operating budget for the Office of EducationUnderstands and meets all financial reporting requirements in the prescribed format, per the direction of the DFCI budget offices.Makes recommendations for cost savings based on a thorough understanding of the areas of responsibility.

 

Human Resources

Recruits, retains, develops, and provides managerial and administrative oversight of all staff within the EO and related operational areas of responsibility. Creates a working environment that supports the ongoing professional growth and development of all staff, high morale, and optimal job satisfaction. Serves as the primary resource for all administrative issues concerning human resources policy issues for staff in the operational areas of responsibility.Facilitates resolution of conflicts and issues that emerge between key educational and administrative stakeholder groups.Provides leadership in the implementation of regular staff meetings, in-service training, and continuing education activities for all areas of responsibility.Develops, implements, and monitors compliance with policies and procedures mandated by institutional and regulatory entities (e.g., The Joint Commission, Department of Public Health).Partners with Human Resources to ensure employment relationships, personnel compensation, and benefits are implemented in a manner consistent with DFCI policies and procedures.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Must be able to manage a team of between 6 – 8 staff at various levels.

 

 

Qualifications Bachelor’s degree with MBA/MPH/MHA or Master’s in Education preferred10 years experience managing ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) programs

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

High level of understanding of formal accreditation of medical education programs
