Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a dynamic academic department, providing world-class clinical care to our patients, fostering expanded basic science and research programs, innovating pathology education, and pursuing new advancements in patient care, teaching, and research. Using technology such as remote frozen section interpretation, we are improving turnaround times and the work-life balance of our physicians. Director of Finance and Administration is responsible for the oversight and management of the clinical, financial, operational, and administrative functions of the Department of Pathology including: personnel recruitment and management; space planning; professional practice issues; grants management; facilities; procurement; and equipment. This position has overarching responsibility for staff hiring, refining scopes of duties, oversight/supervision, training and development, and evaluation. The Director provides administrative continuity in the Chair's absence. Works in concert with the Chair to develop, implement and evaluate faculty activities in accordance with the department's strategic plan; ensures that proper budgeting and financial accounting of all departmental funds occurs. Other activities as needed, determined by the Chair of the Department of Pathology.

Function/Duties of Position

Administration

Work with the Department Chair to develop, implement and evaluate Department and faculty activities in accordance with the Department's strategic plans; keep the Chair informed of any problems or impending issues; coordinates facilities, space planning and remodeling; communicate and enforce policies; administer departmental procedures.Keep Chair informed of School of Medicine, OHSU, OHSUMG, and OHSF rules and policy changes; Represent the Chair in his absence, when appropriate; Ensures that all faculty paperwork is completed in a timely fashion; processes confidential documents for the Chair; coordinates assessment, planning and purchase of technical equipment.

Operational

Ensure correct communication between functional areas of department, with OHSU and with external professionals. Responsible for customer service oversight. Provide excellent service and strive for faculty satisfaction. Act as liaison between management and staff.

Clinical

Fiscal administration of practice plan funds. Oversee clinical practice operations and processes including: professional fee billing, timeliness, and reimbursement; Monitor collections, RVU production and goals. Oversees negotiation/renewals of professional fee contracts and agreements.

Finance

Monitors entire departmental budget; makes recommendations for distribution of SoM funds; ensures that department budgets meet SoM standards; Monitors capital budget process; Negotiates funding for department initiatives from SoM and/or Hospital and Faculty Practice Plan, as needed.

Human Resources

Responsible for recruitment, oversight and performance of core department staff; Assist with department staff processes as necessary; Ensure staff are aware of University, School of Medicine and Hospital/Clinics rules and regulations.Oversee hiring, orientation and supervision of all staff. Assists the Chair in all
aspects of faculty recruitment including, but not limited to, contract negotiations.

Research

Oversee/monitor grant and contract proposals and activity; PPQ and award processes; Ensures that faculty receive assistance as necessary. Oversees quarterly meetings with individual researchers to ensure awareness of grant funding status, status of research budgets, proposed new hires, other research needs and deadlines, etc.

Other

Member of bi-weekly departmental Medical Executive leadership meeting; handles follow-up for issues as needed.
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degreeMinimum of 5 years experience in a senior management position, in an academic department, a large group practice, faculty practice plan, teaching hospital, or other setting which otherwise demonstrates ability to manage a progressive, complex, operation.Demonstrated understanding of academic medicine relative to the evolving changes in organization, financing and delivery of health care and how these forces impact academic medical centers and their clinical departments; Demonstrated ability to accurately analyze complex financial and accounting data, to oversee complex departmental and institutional budgets, fund accounting, and revenue cycle process; Extensive knowledge of business management and administrative theory, with ability to partner in the development, implementation and management of the business and clinical processes of a clinical department; Leadership skills and management style that emphasizes teamwork, strategic thinking, accountability, communications (written and verbal), flexibility, diplomacy and strong work ethic.

Ability to flex schedule based on departmental needs (e.g., early morning or evening meetings).Sit at desk/computer for extended periods. Walk across campus - may be multiple times in one day.
