On the job you will:
Provide legal advice to Manulife and its affiliated companies
Advise the company of known risks and assess and report to the appropriate Company officers as to whether those risks are appropriately identified, assessed, monitored and reported
Engage outside counsel (when necessary and appropriate) after obtaining the necessary approvals, and manage the process of selecting, hiring, monitoring, paying and providing guidance and direction to such outside counsel.
Provide assistance with respect to complex legal, regulatory and compliance matters
Responsible for drafting and reviewing of legal documents and communications
Monitor legislative, regulatory and industry developments, and providing updates to BUs with respect to same
Participate in industry conferences, presentations, committees and working groups
May lead legal research projects/initiatives
Provide any other legal advice that management may require

How you will create impact?
The Counsel role provides robust legal analysis, advice and counsel/representation before the courts or various authorities to support different areas of the business within John Hancock and Manulife respectively.
What we are looking for
Minimum 6 years of prior relevant experience with major law firm and/or corporation
Experience with and knowledge of the legislative frameworks
Very strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong influencing and organizational skills
Tactful and operates with discretion
Ability to quickly identify legal problems/risk
Has experience in Banking & Insurance industry
Strong competence of the written and spoken English language
More than 3 years direct exposure managing multiple markets other than the VN jurisdiction (mandatory)
