Job Overview

The Director, Merchandising Business Office works side by side with the DMM to lead change management and drive the Division's strategic and operational activities, including contenting advertising and overseeing PO entry and turn in. This individual plays a critical leadership role on the team and acts as a Business Generalist with key stakeholders in Buying, Planning, Marketing, and Digital. They must develop and execute a strategic vision with a progressive, customer-centric approach, all while delivering on sales and profit objectives. Known as a trusted, collaborative, and results-oriented leader, business partner, and change agent, they lead through influence and possess professional maturity and industry credibility. Comfortable and effective leading through significant complexity, they quickly evaluate and sunset legacy approaches that no longer align with the strategy. The ideal candidate is recognized for both vision and an equally strong orientation for speed.

What You Will Do

Be proficient in accessing, interpreting, and applying new reporting optimization tools to enhance sales and margin, implementing scalable best practices across the PDIV. Collaborate with the Senior Director of Merchandise Strategy to ensure alignment of strategies across Stores, Digital, and Private Brands. Provide insights to Buyers/Planners on sales opportunities and potential offsets to in-season and future liabilities. Work with the team to manage division-wide financial reports and projections, including classification/category planning, pricing recommendations, and in-season tracking/analysis of key strategies aimed at increasing sales and natural margins. Offer analytical recaps and recommendations for seasonal plans and strategy sessions. Run and compile weekly management summaries, sharing findings with the team. Participate in special projects/committees aimed at boosting sales, margin, or improving process results. Oversee the division calendar, ensuring the team is aware of key deadlines. Handle corporate reporting for merchandising leaders, sending weekly business recaps and best sellers to the GMM and the team. Complete visual forms and DMM presentation templates as required.

Skills You Will Need

Analytical Skills: Proficiency in accessing, interpreting, and applying new reporting optimization tools to enhance sales and margin, implementing scalable best practices across the division.

Strategic Alignment: Ability to collaborate with the Senior Director of Merchandise Strategy to ensure alignment of strategies across Stores, Digital, and Private Brands.

Communication: Excellent communication skills, including open and continuous communication, effective presentation of information in a clear, concise manner.

Leadership and Collaboration: Strong leadership, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work across functional lines and at many levels.

Decision Making: Capability to make "company first" decisions, reduce complexity, act decisively, and model agility in leadership style.

Vendor Management: Serve as the face of Macy’s to the vendor community, articulating the company strategy and negotiating optimal assortment and pricing for customers.

Team Motivation: Temperament to lead and motivate teams, fostering enthusiasm, passion, and desire to gain product expertise.

Digital and Technology Focus: Solid understanding and focus on the digital experience and technology business drivers.

Private Brands Advocacy: Working knowledge of Private Brands, advocating for exclusivity and Private Brand penetration.

Collaboration and Relationship Building: Highly collaborative style, effectively partnering with others and influencing up, down, and across the organization to create effective partnerships.

Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. 5+ years’ experience in retail, catalogue, or ecommerce buying.  Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision. Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
