The Director, Perioperative Services is responsible for the day to day operations, where applicable by entity, for the Endoscopy Lab, Central Sterile, Short Stay Unit, Recovery Room, operating room, Pre-admission testing (PAT), and Surgical Centers of Excellence. This includes operational and capital budgeting for these respective areas, contract maintenance, safety and quality initiatives, growth and margin, and human development.
Essential Job Functions
Support the execution of company strategy across business segments to optimize experience and results. Assure proper use of safety equipment and devices; hold individuals accountable if non-compliant. Practice and encourage staff readiness in compliance with agency regulations and guidelines. Hold regular department meetings, assuring off shifts and satellite offices receive timely and accurate information. Maintain a daily meeting board for purpose of displaying problem solving activity. Provide opportunities for staff to actively provide input into decision making process; seek input before decision is made. Encourage commitment of quality work throughout areas of responsibility. Understand and effectively deploy the LEAN tools to streamline work processes, eliminating waste and redundancy while improving productivity. Act on most urgent tasks; prioritize and delegate workable systems. Use critical thinking skills to proactively resolve key issues that are possible de-railers to productivity and engagement. Lead at least one process improvement initiative for department per year; participate in at least one LEAN project per year outside of department. Clearly articulate what is expected of individuals and provide them with the materials and equipment to do their work. Adhere to Premier benchmarks for own department. Utilize employee engagement survey results in carrying out impact plans; demonstrate employee engagement by employee satisfaction results from survey to survey. Establish performance measures to equitably evaluate staff using objective and job-based criteria; coach towards compliance and address variances. Stretch capital resources by extending life of existing assets. Develop, implement, and maintain metrics related to operating room utilization and efficiency for the system. Assist anesthesia in the facilitation of OR Resource and Efficiency. Actively participate on system committees, along with other perioperative leadership, related to quality and safety. Collaborate with other perioperative leaders, medical leadership, and quality and safety departments to develop and implement quality, safety and efficiency improvements. Meet or exceeds standards of care to national benchmarks where appropriate. Implement strategies to see a statistically significant increase in patient satisfaction. Monitor competency of staff in clinical practice and expected organizational outcomes. Promote compliance with practices that support infection control policies and a safe environment of care as identified by the organization, State, JCAHO, OSHA and other regulatory agencies. Demonstrate a knowledge of the policies and regulations and assures staff compliance. Respond to written variances in the safety inspection rounds and incident reports. Analyze and respond to trends in infection control report. Promote medication safety through a non-punitive reporting system and performance improvement activities. Support and monitor for a limited use of restraints. Support identified safety initiatives. Oversee the proper consistent utilization of patient and employee safety devices. Work collaboratively with anesthesia to develop, implement and maintain appropriate pre-procedure testing requirements. Develop, implement and maintain pre-admission processes that is efficient and patient friendly. Insure Surginet scheduling is maintained based upon block ownership and utilization. Collaborate with anesthesia, perioperative leadership and physician services to optimize scheduling tools and any upgrades or changes made to the tools. Effort should help to reduce/eliminate double work and streamline the process. Implement a self-directed, goal oriented plan for professional development. Modify behavior based on self-evaluation and constructive feedback. Participate in learning experiences, within the practice setting. Stay current in all clinical fields and clinical care provided within Perioperative Services. Participate in appropriate number of continuing educational courses to maintain certification and/or licensure. Work with medical, nursing and technical staff to develop strategic imperatives and tactical solutions for the Perioperative Services in conjunction with the organization's strategic goals. Allocate and delegate work to make efficient use of all resources. Establish staffing patterns according to the department scope of service and budgetary guidelines. Establish clear work objectives and standards to prioritize and focus staff efforts. Establish safety policies and procedures for the operation of equipment and service delivery practice in compliance with regulatory and organization guidelines. Collaborate with others in the delivery of services and the use of resources. Other duties as assigned.Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Health Administration, Business, Public Health, or Management. Three (3) to Five (5) years supervisory/management experience. Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of functional area. Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.
Preferred Qualifications
Three (3) to Five (5) years supervisory/management experience in Perioperative Services strongly preferred. Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania, if applicable.
License, Certification & Clearances
Act 34-PA Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system Certification in specialty area preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has direct supervisory responsibilities and serves as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department. Management responsibilities include hiring, coaching, skills development, recognition and rewards, staff productivity and performance management.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Incumbents will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.). Travel may be expected locally between Independence Health locations.
