The Hartford is a well-established brand with a 200+ years history, and its Personal Insurance group is the #4 Direct Personal Lines Insurer in the U.S. The Director, Communications will lead internal communications for key Personal Insurance initiatives and will shape the strategy for Head of Business communication. The Director will have a strong communications & change management background, along with the ability to quickly absorb information, synthesize into a compelling story, and deliver impactful messages that resonate with target audiences including leaders, employees, and stakeholders.
The Personal Insurance organization has aggressive growth aspirations driven by transformational efforts across the business, which require clear change communications. The Director will proactively gather information from partners across the business, continually evolve the PI story and successfully establish and maintain a relevant and meaningful communication stream to the organization. As a proactive owner of communications, the Director will drive end to end communications for key strategic initiatives, will set and execute a cadence of messages from the Head of Business, and will create effective and well-designed presentation materials for leadership events and town halls.
This role requires an ability to know one’s audience and to be able to flex appropriately to a wide variety of settings and mediums. Please note that writing samples and change management plans will be requested as part of the selection process. This role will report to the Chief Marketing Officer, Personal Insurance, and is based in our Hartford, CT Home Office on a hybrid basis.
Responsibilities
+ Drive strategic end to end communications for the Personal Insurance organization, from planning to messaging to delivery, creating awareness, understanding, and reinforcement. Plan and execute PI-wide messaging strategies ensuring key messages sync and support each other.
+ Partner closely with Personal Insurance Senior Leadership Team to drive cross-functional change management efforts where clarity and continuity are required. Establish and execute against a communication roadmap for key initiatives accounting for change management implications, with primary responsibility for robust planning and influencing organizational execution
+ Own PI- specific vehicles for communicating messages (ex. PI Central SharePoint, Vlogs, Newsletter, Quarterly Leader Meeting, PI Town Hall), measuring and tracking engagement. Use data-driven insights and innovation (ex. Co-Pilot) to adjust and consider new tactics to drive performance.
+ Coordinate end to end communication for Enterprise focus areas (Employee Engagement, DEI Council, Year Long Giving, etc.)
+ Develop Head of Business communication plan, write content on their behalf, execute delivery of communication
+ Lead execution of critical business communications with broad and/or strategically important audiences, including review of content as drafted by SMEs
+ Provide support (and/or take accountability where appropriate) for writing, review/proofing, executing, cascading of key organizational announcements as needed
+ Drive the agenda and content creation for EVP quarterly town halls, coordinate audio/video services with internal and external teams, facilitate Q&A
Qualifications
+ A minimum of seven years of professional experience in a communications role in a large corporate setting; including experience working with communications in a variety of settings (emails, blog posts, town halls, etc.). Insurance/financial services experience preferred.
+ Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, an ability to tell “the story” in a leader’s voice, as well as PowerPoint deck creation skills; a proven ability to “know your audience” as well as the medium you are working in
+ Strong change management skills; adept at utilizing communication vehicles and effective messaging to influence, inform, and gain buy in
+ Strong project management skills, exceptional organizational skills and time management, with ability to manage multiple time sensitive priorities
+ Strong analytical and critical thinking skills; the ability to process complex information quickly as well as to see the big picture and think strategically
+ Ability to work in a matrixed organization with a variety of key stakeholders and partners
+ Works independently and with ownership, seeking feedback where appropriate, comfortable with ambiguity
+ Sound judgment and decision-making skills
+ Excellent relationship building and influencing skills; able to discreetly work with confidential information; professional maturity
+ Proficient in MS office with particular expertise in PowerPoint
+ B.A./B.S. Required, advanced degree a plus
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$127,040 - $190,560
