Director, Planned Giving
Habitat
The Director of Planned Giving manages front-line development officers and supports the Senior Director of Planned Giving in leading the department. The Director of Planned Giving must demonstrate expertise managing a portfolio of individual donors. As a skilled planned giving professional, the candidate must successfully build relationships with individuals, financial advisors, and colleagues (both internal and external) which result in current and future planned gift donations. The candidate will have excellent written and oral communication skills, administrative skills, and a track record of collaboration.
Critical Few Objectives:
• Manage front-line development officers ensuring fundraising goals are met or succeeded.
• Personally establish a strategic and systematic focus on closing legacy commitments from high net-worth individuals.
• As a leader in the department, assist leadership by 1) running meetings for the department and planned giving development officers, and 2) using their skills and knowledge of federal and state laws and IRS rulings to continuously review the planned giving program and make improvement recommendations.
• Present on planned giving topics both internally and externally to colleagues and prospects to secure additional legacy commitments.
• Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward qualified prospects and donors, managing a portfolio of qualified relationships in a defined territory as well as leads acquired by MarketSmart.
• Respond to donor inquiries to the PG phone lines and email box.
• Collaborate with colleagues, both internal and external, to secure additional legacy gift commitments.
• Conduct and/or coordinate face-to-face visits, and other activities with donors.
• Meet or exceed team’s multi-million-dollar annual legacy gift goals
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
MANAGEMENT, 20%
• Manage the day-to-day activities of front-line development officers to ensure fundraising goals are met by providing oversight and guidance on establishing a strategic and systematic focus on securing legacy commitments.
• Assist department leadership by planning and running department meetings and using skills and knowledge of tax laws and IRS regulations to continuously recommend and assist in improving plans for securing legacy gifts and the planned giving program.
STRATEGIC PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT, 30%
• Establish a strategic and systematic focus on securing legacy commitments from individuals. This is strategy and development of the solicitation process and plan.
• Work independently and be self-motivated in initiating contacts with potential donors in portfolio, acquired by MarketSmart, or who call/write to the PG phone line.
• Routinely engage donors in portfolio, acquired by MarketSmart or who call/write to the PG phone line for face-to-face meetings, donor engagement and affiliate introductions. Work with affiliates to collaborate and review donor lists.
PLAN ACTIVATION, SOLICITATIONS AND REPORTING, 60%
• Demonstrate a keen sense of curiosity for donors – seeking to “crack the code” of what compels each donor to give substantially by asking the right questions – and able to personally adapt as needed to meet the needs of donors and compassionately articulate the Habitat story.
• Systematically carry out strategies for cultivation of planned giving prospects and solicitation of planned gifts (This is the activation of the strategic solicitation process and plan.)
• Guide the development of compelling proposals and presentations and reports. Provide accurate and timely activity and pipeline reports and revenue forecasts.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 7+ years of front-line experience in individual giving or planned gift development
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state laws and IRS rulings that effect cash, securities, real estate, personal property and IRA gifts to public charities
• Significant experience managing gifts of property, charitable trusts, charitable gift annuities, bequests, and payable on death gifts to charities.
• Demonstrated track record of successful fundraising in an environment of similar complexity. Experience in a multi-national federated organization with the ability to thrive a plus.
• Successful experience closing complex planned gifts.
• Significant experience in managing a team of development officers.
• Superior presentation skills, including the presence to deal effectively with diverse constituencies including principal donors, national staff, and leadership in the field. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write and speak clearly and effectively, and to listen, and the capacity to engage, inspire and persuade.
• Passion for and commitment to the HFH mission. Ability to ignite a passion and to create and communicate excitement about HFH’s compelling mission
• Strong development-related technology skills
• A self-starter with a high level of energy, self-confidence, and a positive “can-do” attitude are essential, as is humility.

• Advanced degree, or certification such as JD, LLM in Taxation, CFP, or CAP.

The actual salary offered for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including location, internal equity and the candidate’s qualifications and professional experience. HFHI offers a competitive, comprehensive benefits package that varies by country and typically includes vacation leave, sick leave, personal days, health insurance options, retirement plan contributions and life insurance. For work locations in the US, the hiring range for this position is $116,030 to $136,500.
Staff hired on a hybrid basis in the United States near an HFHI office location (Atlanta, Georgia / Americus, GA / Washington, DC), are required to report to the office on Tuesdays.
