Director, Purchasing

Job Title: Director of Purchasing

The position will oversee a group of commodities in the Purchasing Department being responsible procurement management functions, including: purchasing procedure and policy (GOS), supplier relationship management, quoting, strategy development, negotiation, supplier selection and escalation of issues. A key focus being cost reduction opportunities and waste elimination.

Performance Expectations

Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the purchasing activities of the facility.  Ensure compliance with purchasing policies and procedures and support continuous improvement of the policies, procedure, forms and systems. Oversee sourcing strategies ensuring alignment globally. Partner with the right suppliers at the right price. Identify and develop suppliers for key parts withing your categories. Lead supplier escalation calls. Evaluate cost and quality of goods or services and bring innovation ideas forward. Negotiate or oversee the negotiation of contracts and pricing. Lead VA/VE activities with suppliers to ensure lowest cost process is selected.  Support CAT’s internally. Review and process claims against suppliers. Support new business wins, launch and supplier/part development. Lead Cost savings and process improvement actions.  Interview, hire and oversee training of staff. Perform other duties/projects as assigned.

Credentials

Post-secondary education in business administration, commerce, economics, material management or related field experience. Recommended SCMP / Certified Professional Purchaser (CPP) designation or similar. Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and provide overall leadership and direction within work environment. Have a strong commodity background ideally in powertrain specific manufacturing processes. Knowledge of Material Indices and fluctuations and demonstrated success with negotiations.

Desired Characteristics

Analyze purchase trends for current and past years to identify opportunities or create a data set for negotiation.  Detail oriented and comfortable with data analytics. Work collaboratively within a team environment including suppliers and our plants as part of your team.  Communications both verbal and written will be critical to success.  Possess ability to read and understand engineering drawings with the ability to communicate technical information to suppliers and engineers.  Engage in continuous learning to keep up-to-date information on new products and market trends, and to work in and help optimize our purchasing tools and systems. High level of interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate, and facilitate others in group situations and instruct others in new techniques Negotiate and establish contracts, resolve disputes with suppliers. Negotiate terms with new suppliers and changes to agreements with existing suppliers
