Director, Sterile Processing - Department of Surgery - Full Time
Position Summary: The Director plans, directs and coordinates activities involved in the acquisition, decontamination, storage, assembly, cleaning and sterilization of medical, surgical and related supplies, materials and equipment utilized in the care and treatment of patients and the operation of the Sterile Processing Departments across The Guthrie Clinic. Maintains and evaluates all clinical and management activities of the Central Sterile Departments for standardize compliance with Quality outcomes, regulatory compliance, and education. Provides leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and department philosophy and goals. Education, License & Cert: + Registered nurse (currently licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing) or a Surgical Technician. + Must be certified in central sterile processing services or obtain within 1 year of employment. + Baccalaureate degree in related field or working towards. Master’s preferred. Experience: + 3 years demonstrated abilities in leadership and functioning as part of the Sterile Processing Department and/or Operating Room Team. Essential Functions: + From a system level, creates learning plans that meet the needs of individual and specific groups. Evaluates and documents results of learning activities. Participates in tracking and trending educational and quality data. + Evaluates employee competency on proper procedures and methods based on department and hospital polices. + Develops, monitors, and revises system SPD educational programs for both new and existing employees. + Develops Training Programs including tracking system for development of uncertified individuals to certified sterile processing technician. + Established and oversees sterilization procedures in ancillary areas where sterilization is performed (all clinic areas utilizing a sterilizer) + Performs frequent and periodic rounding in all areas where the system sterilizes instruments. + Works with all SPD Leadership and purchasing team to establish/ implement system contracts. + Assists with all system SPD standardization. + Provides subject matter expertise for Surgical Suite and Supply Chain functional areas and defines overall strategic direction relating to system process and standards + Facilitates the development of appropriate system policies and procedures required to support and sustain all areas in which sterilization of instrumentation takes place. + Collaborates with departmental leadership, as well as surgical services leadership to facilitate daily operations. + Serves as a professional role model for staff and students by maintaining knowledge and expertise in clinical areas. + Proactively responds to support changes and anticipate problems. + Completes, oversees, and adheres to budget processes. + Promotes a healthy working environment through effective communication conflict resolution and staff empowerment. + Demonstrates effective time management, flexibility, prioritization, and recognizes the need for professional and self-growth. + Participates in Operational Excellence processes to improve efficacy and efficiency of care and service. + Creates, maintains, and ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and standard work to provide safe patient care. + Utilizes conceptual framework and theory as a basis for sterile processing and high-level disinfection practice based on manufacturer's instructions for use, AAMI standards, OSHA standards, AORN standards, and other pertinent regulatory bodies. + Performs HR functions including, but not limited to job descriptions, performance evaluations, recruitment, selection, hiring, promoting, and disciplining as required.
