General Summary:This position is responsible for managing a work unit of highly skilled underwriting professionals and working collaboratively with other Underwriting management, Home Office and Field based partners in the attainment of top-line and bottom-line growth objectives through sound, focused risk assessment and decision making.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Perform all underwriting responsibilities as required on assigned cases and new business opportunities. Assess risk and make balanced judgment calls on all offers within premium authority limits. Act as a mentor and technical coach to underwriting professionals, motivate employees and provide both positive and constructive developmental feedback at the case level on  decisions made by members of the work unit.Develop personal credibility with key brokers, customers and field management.Drive the achievement of appropriate growth objectives; targeted profit and persistency levels for the work unit/assigned offices.Deliver tracking and analysis of individual and work unit performance against established goals.Analyze performance of assigned business, partnering as needed with field management. Identify risk trends, challenges and opportunities.Focus on rigorous expense management.Advocate for and lead change management efforts. Create/reinforce an environment committed to continuous learning and growth.Provide leadership decision making in areas of workload management and resource allocation; focus the right people on the right tasks at the right time.Contribute to quality review, policies and practice rules development and support product development initiatives. Provide leadership in continued growth and development of risk tools for Underwriters.Responsible for all HR functions of the team: develop team members through regular 1x1’s, performance appraisals, ongoing review of developmental plans and day to day risk assessment reviews.Positively contribute to all planning initiatives, project efforts and articulate reporting tasks to management.Provide Manager back-up as necessary and perform other duties as assigned.

Bachelors degree preferred or equivalent, relevant business experience5 + years of technical risk management experience in a product linePrior management experience preferredKnowledge of the sales/distribution processDemonstrated leadership in achieving goalsAbility to implement operational plansAbility to work effectively with all levels of the organizationDemonstrated ability to assimilate market and case specific data and identify product impacts and opportunitiesStrong mentoring and coaching skills to assist team members in various stages of career and technical developmentAbility to motivate employees to achieve resultsCreative problem solving/analytical reasoning skillsExcellent communication skills, both verbal and writtenDemonstrated ability to be persuasive and to have strong negotiation and influencing skillsStrong organizational skills and the ability to shift gears and work on a variety of tasks at the same time.PC Proficiency.Effective presentation skills.

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$89,900.00-$169,900.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.  All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
