**Position Description:**
Directs, plans, coordinates and supervises the operation and activities of a specialized unit or small department; develops and implements policies and procedures, administers the budget, organizes tasks and sets priorities. Serves as liaison with university personnel and community at large. Works under general supervision with broad latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

**Major/Essential Functions:**
+ Investigates all laboratory incidents and hazards, including those referred in the Health and Safety Reviews.
+ Assures compliance with federal, state and local regulations in all areas of Hazardous Materials handling and utilization including biological, and chemical l materials associated with wastes. Documents all aspects of program components as appropriate. Knowledgeable regarding Federal, State and local Safety and environmental regulations and assures that the Hazardous Materials Program are carried out using safe. Updates Hazardous Materials practices and policies. Assures that careful & accurate records are maintained and shared. May dispose of Hazardous waste. Maintains accurate manifests/records of waste generated and responsive to request for pick up and disposals of hazardous material.
+ Assists in monitoring of operations, institutional compliances and maintenance of Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL-3) laboratory. Assures compliance with applicable rules, regulations and guidelines. Assists in coordinating operational integrity of laboratory support functions, security and laboratory validation.
+ Coordinates, develop, presents and evaluates production and presentation of safety training and safety programs in the areas of biological, chemical, and laboratory safety. Provides required annual training and develops ad hoc presentations - online and in person. Acts as the Institutional Bio Safety Officer, reviews research protocols as assigned, and provides updates regarding research safety to the IBC, IRB, and IACUC. Recommends licensing of laboratories as appropriate under protocol applications. Review assigned research proposals/ protocols to determine if hazardous materials/ operations prose a threat. Review recommendations are provided to the appropriate oversight committee.
+ Validates laboratory worker credentialing as appropriate. Database of Laboratory Workers is maintained by Safety Services office and up-to-date. Lab workers are required to complete Lab Safety Training. Employees passing the Lab Safety Essentials Course are recommended to the IBC for Credentialling. Objective of credentialing is 100% of Lab Workers.
+ Reviews current laws, regulations and / or guidelines relating to biological and chemical laboratory safety. Provides reports and commentary regarding implementation.
+ Provide oversight of the Sr. Safety Officers to assure compliance of the safety programs across campus and that they are completing their assigned tasks.
+ Must have a maintain valid State of Texas Driver’s License and be an approved drivers determined by Risk Management and insurance carrier. Travel to other campuses and regional sites.
+ Manages the collection, processing and preparation for proper disposal of chemical, and biological waste. Facilitates, collection, processing and preparation for proper disposal of chemical, and biological waste to meet applicable rules regulations, policies and procedures.
+ Responds to spills of chemical, biological hazards and provides advice, assistance, supervision, and /or materials and resources. Ensures hazardous materials spills are minimized, contained, centralized and removed; minimizes potential property damage and risk of injury to building occupants; assesses the level of response necessary to safely manage incidents.
+ Adhere to all TTUHSCEP Policies, procedures and processes.
+ Personally demonstrate, display, and act in accordance with TTUHSCEP’s values (Service, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, Advancement, and Teamwork. Actively promote and encourage staff across the institution.
+ Performs other duties as assigned as by Sr. Director and / or local administration. Performs other applicable duties relate to responsibilities of the position as assigned by the administration.

**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Excellent verbal and written communication and customer service skills for a diverse stakeholder base.
+ Previous experience in compliance in the chemical, and biological regulations for both research and clinical programs.
+ Thorough understanding of regulations from both institutional policies and state/federal regulatory entities in regards to chemical, biological and safety programs.
+ Ability to develop and deliver a comprehensive safety and compliance training program for users of chemical and biological hazards.
+ Be dependable, trustworthy, and have the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with stakeholders and coworkers.
