Job Summary:   

Key leadership and management position within Central Maine Medical Center. This individual’s primary responsibility is to ensure best clinical practice within CMH in accordance with AORN, ICEAL, ACC, STS, ASPAN, AACN standards for our patients receiving care in our invasive and non-invasive Cardiovascular suites. The scope includes the CSPA, Cath Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, and the Endo Vascular Lab. This individual’s primary responsibility is to ensure the provision of exceptional patient care in a safe and trustful environment resulting in optimal patient/family outcomes. The Director provides oversight for the overall growth and development of their assigned departments incorporating the objectives, policies and procedures of the department and CMMC Services. The Director is responsible for effective leadership, working collaboratively with the medical staff and leadership, assuring clinical excellence, supporting professional development, promoting teamwork, collaboration and accountability, management of resources and the financial performance of their respective departments. Reports to Vice President of Service Lines/CMHVI or his/her designee.

Leadership:

Ensures the nursing process is used to support the mission, vision and values of the organization.Empowers, supports and inspires direct care clinicians to work toward a shared mission and vision by analyzing assessment data, identifying problems, and using critical thinking skills to make decisions needed to provide the best possible patient care.Assesses clinical practice, standards of patient care and work environment by evaluating data from staff satisfaction survey, staffing effectiveness, core measures, national patient safety goals, patient satisfaction, unit- based and hospital-wide performance improvement and nurse- sensitive indicator data.Identifies opportunities for improvement and utilizes the Performance Improvement Model of P-D-C-A to initiate change.Develop, implement and evaluate unit-based systems and processes that support direct care nurses in the delivery of patient care that is safe, effective, efficient, timely and equitable.Assures a safe work environment for all staff.Collaborates with Medical Directors in a model that fosters alignment of initiatives and progressing towards strategic goals for system cardiovascular services.Assures that the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses is used to guide nursing practice.Assures that patients and clinical staff are educated on the Patient’s Bill of RightsRecognizes ethical issues in clinical practice and assists the direct care staff to seek expert consultation.Follows hospital policy for dealing with illegal, incompetent, or impaired practice.Promotes the leadership philosophy of CMHC through team facilitation, vision and values; goals for units and teams align with organizational mission, goals and objectives.Collaborates with System Directors and Nurse Leaders and other disciplines to design, implement, evaluate and/or adapt systems which drive and support high quality safe patient care and achieve targeted clinical and fiscal outcomes.Creates an environment that involves direct care nurses in making decisions. Empowers direct care nurses to initiate changes that improve patient care and nursing practice.Uses direct care staff feedback to make changes and improve patient care, nursing practice and working environment.Supports direct care staff in career development opportunities.Develops and maintains strong professional relationships.Takes an active interest in the success of others.Is able to give and receive constructive feedback.Recognizes the need for positive reinforcement and uses positive feedback as a tool for motivating and maximizing performance.Mentors staff to be accountable for their professional behaviors and implements performance management coaching as needed.Utilizes the expertise of the nursing leadership team in planning and providing education in the area of clinical expertise for nursing and other health care professionals. The Director fosters a learning environment that enhances clinical knowledge and skill of other health care professionals in a variety of practice settings.Understands the components of cultural competency and assures direct care clinical staff are competent to care for diverse populations.Maintains a work environment that is fair.Supports aging clinical staff with strategic workplace initiatives.Communicates expectations of the direct care clinicians for their accountability with quality improvement activities.Assures supervision for clinical personnel, and students assigned with the department.Works collaboratively with other Directors to assure a high level of service to the patient and the department.Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff conducive to wellness.Keeps leadership informed of unusual patient, staff, physician or risk management issues.Forwards minutes of staff meetings, practice committee meetings, newsletters to leadershipValues each team member’s contribution by giving power and respect to each person’s voice and ideas.Communicates both positive and negative feedback to staff from patients and staff as a learning opportunity.Encourages participation in unit based and hospital committees.Encourages participation in outreach to the community.Recognizes staff in unit, hospital and community activities.Supports leadership development with direct care nurses, resources nurses and unit coordinatorsProvides and supports leadership education

Education and Experience:

Master of Science in Nursing, Master of Business Administration, Master of Health Administration orequivalent higher degree preferredIf RN, Board certified in nursing leadership within 1 yearIf RN, Licensed to Practice Nursing in the State of Maine3-5 years progressive leadership experience w/ specific experience in management of cardiovascular invasive/non-invasive services preferred
