Job Description

The successful candidate will be well-versed in existing global regulatory ESG reporting requirements, with the ability to provide thought leadership to help American Express strategically navigate the evolving ESG landscape. You’ll be hands-on as well as strategic, with deep expertise in regulatory reporting and internal controls and in building and improving robust processes that can scale to meet both our current and future challenges. This role will partner closely with our Enterprise ESG, Legal, Real Estate, Climate Risk, HR, SOX, Internal Audit and subject matter teams owning E, S and G data across the organization, to ensure that we remain well coordinated and ready to meet our ESG regulatory reporting requirements.  

This is a Director level position based in New York reporting to the VP, Statutory and ESG Reporting based in India, within the wider Corporate Controllership organization. The role will have 4 direct reports split between US and India.

Key Responsibilities:

      Monitor the evolving global regulatory ESG reporting landscape and provide thought leadership on how to evolve our ESG reporting framework to meet existing and future requirements. Stay apprised of voluntary ESG reporting developments to ensure consistency.       Evaluate the applicability of new mandatory ESG reporting regulations globally (and at the legal entity level) based on deterministic thresholds, in partnership with the Legal team, to identify AXP relevant disclosures.       Build capabilities in terms of people, processes, internal controls and systems (including the evaluation of reporting software workflows) to meet all mandatory ESG reporting requirements globally.       Build a reporting process to construct mandatory enterprise level ESG reports (e.g. for CSRD and California)       Develop and operationalize standardized policies and processes regarding sustainability reporting (e.g., materiality assessments, disclosure controls and procedures, estimation approaches)       Collaborate with key internal control and compliance teams (SOX, Operational Excellence and Internal Audit) to ensure that ESG data processes include the right level of controls and governance to be ‘assurance ready’.       Coordinates readiness assessments and assurance activities over ESG disclosures, where required.       Work with data provider teams around the organization to collect the data required to support mandatory ESG disclosures.       Support the production of the Greenhouse Gas Inventory.       Build cross-functional partnerships within American Express, particularly with Enterprise ESG, Legal, HR, Climate Risk, Real Estate, Treasury and Controllership stakeholders.       Participate in external ESG forums and engage with other public registrants on ESG disclosure and reporting matters. Conduct ESG benchmarking and develop recommendations to enhance ESG reporting       Lead a global team of colleagues and contractors based in India and US

Minimum Qualifications:

8+ years of relevant ESG work experience e.g. ESG reporting, Carbon accounting, ESG risk assessment, ESG assurance. Experience in working with ESG reporting standards and frameworks such as GRI, SASB, TCFD, etc. Strong executive presence and proficiency in written and verbal communications People leadership experience and ability to work collaboratively across teams and geographies Strong understanding of ESG issues and willingness to keep up to date with the latest ESG guidelines and developments Experience in working with ESG reporting standards and frameworks such as GRI, SASB, TCFD, CSRD, etc; Ability to navigate ambiguity and change, while remaining focused on end goals. Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively while maintaining accuracy and adhering to deadlines Advanced PowerPoint and Excel proficiency

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required and Masters/MBA preferred Big 4 experience and/or financial services exposure are pluses; Relevant professional certifications such as CPA, CFA, Certified Sustainability Practitioner (CSP), Greenhouse Gas Management Institute diploma, or equivalent are a plus

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
