The continuation of this position beyond five years is contingent upon future funding.** We are seeking a 0.5 FTE senior research scientist to serve as the **Director for the Collaborative for Socio-Ecological Engagement (CSEE)** for a 5-year term. CSEE is a UW tri-campus interdisciplinary research center focused on creating knowledge that advances our understanding of the dynamic connections that exist between ecological systems (e.g., ecosystems, biodiversity, and natural resources) and social systems (e.g., human communities, institutions, and cultural norms). The institutional home for CSEE is at UW Bothell while the research center operates out of the Environmental Education and Research Center (EERC) at Saint Edward State Park (SESP), approximately six miles from the UW Bothell campus. The facility includes a 2,000 square-foot indoor space and an adjacent 700 square-foot outdoor space that support field-based research. CSSE is intended to be fiscally self-sustaining via grant, gifts, program revenue, and similar funding sources. CSEE advances interdisciplinary, equity-centered, and place-based research programs in Bothell-Kenmore-Kirkland with a broad reach to the surrounding urban communities. CSEE engages in initiatives that investigate the diverse and complex relationships between the environment and human societies. CSEE’s research focus includes: the causes of environmental degradation and their impact on societies, the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss on communities and the environment, sustainable resource management practices, environmental and social justice issues, adaptation and resilience in the face of environmental challenges and pedagogical practices that advance these research areas. CSEE’s strength comes from fostering participatory, multi-disciplinary, and place-based research among stakeholders with varied historical backgrounds and cultural norms. Such an approach to research emphasizes the sharing of socio-ecological questions while recognizing the values we have in common. We anticipate that these efforts will significantly bolster the promotion of sustainability across various spheres. CSEE accomplishes this goal through community-engaged and participatory research, place-based and participatory creative practice, undergraduate field study, community science, and co-curricular partnerships with K-12 schools and other partners. The director of the research center will report to the Vice chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) at UW Bothell. In addition to serving as the Principal Investigator (PI) for Center grants, this position is responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight of the Center’s operations while ensuring a commitment to integrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
