Job Description
The Director, Health Information Management (HIM), Coding, and Clinical Documentation Improvement is responsible for developing and implementing strategies related to information management, hospital and physician clinical documentation and coding and clinical documentation improvement. The Director oversees the integrity and availability of patient information for treatment, payment, and operational purposes.Reporting to the Vice President, Revenue Cycle, the Director leads a large team of professionals to manage and maintain efficient coding processes, as well as HIM operations throughout the organization. The Director implements policies and procedures related to medical records, diagnosis, and procedure coding.
The Director has oversight of medical record, coding and other documentation processes related to governmental and regulatory compliance. They provide an educational and advisory role with clinical staff, physicians, and other departments related to clinical documentation, coding, release of protected health information, data integrity, access to and use of the electronic medical record.
The Director proactively supports efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promotes a safe environment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
Job Responsibilities
Oversees consistency in operational processes, compliance with policies and regulations and outcomes across Health Information Systems, Hospital and Physician Coding, and Clinical Documentation Improvement.
Oversees Health Information Services, Hospital and Physician Coding, and Clinical Documentation Improvement Managers and personnel to promote steady workflow, productivity, data integrity, privacy, and quality of work performed.
Ensures compliance for consistent quality coding at Children's. Monitors coding and documentation accuracy. Ensures timely feedback and focused educational programs on the results of auditing and monitoring activities.
Collaborates with the IS&T Department to identify and implement appropriate technology and workflow to support daily operations, improve efficiency and key performance indicators.
Monitors unbilled accounts and denial trends to ensure that records are completed and accounts are coded in a timely manner and within established benchmarks.
Prepares and updates strategic and operational plans related to areas of responsibility with the VP of Revenue Cycle, with input from appropriate operational and support areas.
Oversight of coding educational programs to ensure all providers, coding staff and other personnel maintain compliance with coding requirements and governmental regulations.
Indirect leadership to all coding areas which presently do not have direct reporting or accountability-by being the coding and billing compliance resource for the hospital system.
Collaborates with other departments to resolve operational issues and prioritize process improvement activities.
Analyzes data to identify and report operational trends and outcomes that could have adverse impact to the organization or demonstrate quantifiable improvements in performance. Implements and monitors corrective action plans, as warranted, to assure resolution to issues identified.
Ensures the appropriate dissemination and communication of regulation, policy and guideline changes related health information practices, coding, and clinical documentation.
Develops staff performance expectations, goals, and metrics. Holds staff accountable for achieving performance standards. Establishes and communicates performance and behavioral standards and follows appropriate performance management processes when counseling staff.
Develops operating and capital budgets for area of responsibility and monitors performance against budget, developing action plans as needed to address variances.
Responsible for all aspects of managing and leading a team including interviewing, hiring, training, developing, directing work and processes, managing performance, recognizing, and rewarding employees.

The ideal candidate will have the following credentials:
Minimum of 7 years of Health Information Management leadership experience in a multi hospital health system.
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Record Administration, Health Information Management, or related health care field.
Active RHIA or RHIT certification required.
Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, CMS and Joint Commission, as it relates to Medical Records, Coding and Clinical Documentation.
Demonstrated knowledge of complete and accurate documentation as well as coding and billing practices in all healthcare settings and for all healthcare disciplines.
Knowledge of the conventions, rules, and guidelines for multiple classification systems.
Ability to identify, develop, and implement strategic process improvements to support organizational goal attainment.
Ability to partner constructively with health system service line and physician leaders, as well as other healthcare practitioners.
Demonstrated experience in developing processes, procedures and policies that positively impact departmental and health system results.

Preferred Qualifications
MBA or MHA degree.
Active CHPC or CHPS credential.
Knowledge and experience managing coding and/or auditing both hospital and physician services.
Experience with a hospital clinical documentation improvement program.
Hands on experience with EPIC.
