DIRECTOR-HOSPITAL OPERATIONS (RN)

Summary

JOB SUMMARY: 


The Director of Hospital Operations reports to the AVP-Operations and is responsible for nursing operations, patient logistics, the Virtual Hospital, flex pool, hospital operations coordinators (HOCs), and other shared nursing resources. Key priorities for this position include building Sinai’s flexible staffing pool, developing a centralized staffing model, implementing Cerner’s capacity management module, and working with stakeholders on creating processes to facilitate timely, safe patient flow throughout the facility congruent with a “no patient should wait” vision. Provides 24/7 (onsite and on call) leadership of Hospital Operations Office (formerly Nursing Operations) with oversight for overall hospital staffing, HOCs, Staffing Coordinators. Oversight for hospital operations and patient flow in and out of the hospital, including daily admissions, discharges and safe staffing across the hospital. Develops and maintains a 24/7 Patient Flow Command Center with representatives from HOCs, Care Management, EVS, Transport.

This position provides administrative leadership along with consultation to all programmatic operations and outcomes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Quality and Safety: Takes the lead in ensuring safe, efficient, quality care at all times.

Monitor compliance standards and integrity management for state and federal regulations and accreditation. Hospital Operations - Oversight with hospital leadership with complimentary consultation within the clinical services. Serve as a facilitator/committee member for relevant teams specific to clinical services. Provide clinical service leadership for improving all relevant quality, finance and operational system level committees. Align with hospital and system quality initiatives in order to assimilate quality goals and targets for each clinical service. Compliance and integrity management – Promote, monitor and evaluate the operations, quality and accuracy of patient flow and patient placement. Policy development and advocacy - Advocates for standardization of processes and work across the institution as a whole; also helping shape policies and standards related to operationalizing changes in real time. Research and evaluation – Conducts research in a variety of capacity management and resource deployment topics that impacts effective change focusing on evidence-based practice. Oversight for hospital operations and patient flow in and out of the hospital, including daily admissions, discharges and safe staffing across the hospital.

Leadership, Administration and Management: Leads by example, empowering others to achieve their full potential. 

Assign, direct and review the work of department staff; hold staff accountable for meeting deadlines, objectives and outcomes. Direct responsibility for performance reviews. Use data to efficiently communicate patient flow opportunities whereby utilize staffing resources to meet patient care requirements and other professional responsibilities. Identify and develop top talent to meet the business and quality needs of our patients and organization. Develop and implement health care delivery model which promotes high patient/staff satisfaction levels and optimal patient care outcomes. Oversight for hospital operations and patient flow in and out of the hospital, including daily admissions, discharges and safe staffing across the hospital Oversees and continuously assess risk mitigation for the organization. Plan, select and devise nursing and logistical operations, work methods, procedures, work flow and standards for quality and quantity of work, including staffing standards. Prepare formal answers to, and recommend the adjustment of, grievances and disciplinary matters. Direct practice of nursing and play a critical role in developing and supporting the strategic direction of the hospital and the organization’s operational plan by monitoring, evaluating and improving the quality of patient care Integrate shared leadership and foster collaboration across multi disciplinary disciplines to arrive at decisions affecting the unit. Fosters an environment for continuous education and professional development. Interpret and direct the implementation of nursing philosophy and objectives, departmental policies and procedures, and apply recognized standards of nursing care and practice. Builds, maintains matrix reports and relationships with: Transport, EVS, Emergency Management, Administrators on Call, Care Management, Ambulatory leaders for post-discharge follow-up, Development/Signature Services, and Ancillary department leaders for staffing coordination and redeployment (Imaging, Cardiac, Lab).

Financial Stability: Takes purposeful steps to ensure stewardship with resources.

Budgetary oversight and serves as the operations leader for all assigned clinical and operational programs. Identify any and all variances and develop a plan of correction as needed. Provide relevant solutions and tactics to achieve success through operational and financial challenges. Implement critical budgetary strategies designed to achieve maximum utilization and efficiency. Plan, develop and oversee lag budget for the department. Balance, analyze historical data, determine trends and forecast revenues.

Patient/Family Experience: Ensures a best-in-class patient and family experience.

Analyze surveys to monitor patient and employee satisfaction. Implement and develop patient satisfaction action plan to meet the goals for the organization. Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Seasoned professional knowledge; equivalent to a Master's degree; knowledge in more than one discipline. BSN required; Master’s degree or enrollment in master’s program required. Will consider candidates with a non-nursing background with significant, relevant experience. 3-5 years of relevant experience. Current MD or eNLC state RN License, preferred. National Cert. within 1 year of hire. Experience in managing nursing/staffing operations, hospital capacity command centers, shared nursing resources and patient flow activities.
