Director Integrated Laser Systems

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership:  Overall responsibility for the successful operation of the business activities at the Coherent Aerospace & Defense facility in Beavercreek, OH.  Responsible for managing a team of highly skilled engineers centered in Beavercreek, augmented with a geographically dispersed team, executing demanding technical programs.  Responsible for personnel, operations, safety, and security.

Business and Strategy Development:  Responsible for supporting EP&T senior management in development of business initiatives, product roadmaps and strategy.  Responsible for supporting new business initiatives, serving as the site’s customer interface.

Personnel Development: Provides collaborative guidance to engineering team.  Provides feedback through coaching and mentoring.  Provides administrative and technical support to engineering management.

Technical expertise: Exhibits a strong understanding of laser physics and engineering, especially high-average-power lasers used for directed-energy applications.  Understands team’s core competencies, competitive advantages, and technical requirements for successful execution of programs and growth of the business.

Education & Experience

Minimum B.S. in engineering field or applied physics.  M.S. or Ph.D. in optics, applied physics or electrical engineering preferred.  Typically 15+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience.  Typically requires 7+ years diversified leadership, planning, communication, organization, and people motivation skill (or equivalent experience).

Must have proven track record of managing large teams of engineers executing difficult technical developments as at least a second-level manager.

Experience executing defense programs highly desirable.  Experience working for a large system integrator or directly for the U.S. Government highly desirable.

Skills

Must have significant technical background lasers in related field.  Deep understanding of optics and laser engineering highly preferred.

Must have collaborative management style that manages by influence when possible and edict when necessary.

Must have significant business-management experience.  Experience successfully developing product roadmaps and strategy, raising funding, managing customers and growing a business are highly desirable.

Familiarity with executing to Department of Defense Contracts as Prime contractor or major Subcontractor is a plus.
