Minimum Qualifications
The Director of Academic Advising is a new position at LSU Shreveport that will lead efforts to centralize academic advising. This role will build and oversee a dedicated team of professional advisors who provide personalized academic and career planning guidance to students, with a strong emphasis on holistic advising practices. The Director will focus on creating a positive environment that enhances student engagement, satisfaction, success, and persistence. This position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership:
+ Lead the development and implementation of a centralized academic advising strategy that aligns with the university's mission and goals.
+ Collaborate with student success leadership to integrate the advising model into the broader student success framework.
+ Oversee planning, implementation, and evaluation of advising services campus-wide.
+ Cultivate partnerships with other institutions to enhance transfer pathways for new students transitioning to upper division programs.
+ Serve on university committees, including the retention, first-year experience, and academic advising committees.
Team Leadership:
+ Mentor and cultivate a positive, inclusive culture among professional advisors while promoting a commitment to continuous learning and improvement in advising practices.
+ Train all advisors in strengths-based models that promote student success, resilience, and self-efficacy, emphasizing proactive, holistic, and appreciative advising approaches.
+ Collaborate with first-year advisors to develop tailored support strategies that aid new students in their transition to college, ensuring they have the resources and guidance needed for a successful start.
+ Support undergraduate transfer coordinators in designing, evaluating, and enhancing transfer student advising processes to improve the overall transfer student experience.
+ Conduct annual performance evaluation and planning sessions with direct report staff.
Administrative Duties:
+ Oversee advising office operations, including budgeting, resource allocation, hiring and training, operational standards, and records maintenance.
+ Provide periodic updates and comprehensive annual reports on unit goals, accomplishments, and assessments of student learning objectives and their impact on student success.
+ Develop a system for tracking advising session information, such as appointment trends and advisor caseload data, to aid in evaluating service utilization and staffing needs.
+ Maintain a centralized database of curriculum maps to ensure advisors have access to accurate and up-to-date program information for effective student guidance.
Advising Practices:
+ Design academic advising services to meet students' academic, personal, and career development needs, with a focus on increasing retention and persistence.
+ Develop and formalize campus-wide policies, procedures, and assessment practices for academic advising.
+ Develop unit goals, objectives, and student learning outcomes, along with corresponding assessment measures.
+ Integrate risk assessment and career/major exploration tools into advising processes.
+ Create solutions to improve advisor communication and access to a student's advising history, including a process for documenting advisor session notes, to ensure accuracy and consistency in student support.
+ Implement practices that align with recommendations from the Louisiana Board of Regents, including the Meauxmentum Framework; stay updated on legislative changes and implement relevant adjustments that affect advising practices.
Program Development & Student Engagement:
+ Create strategies to actively engage students in the advising process, aligning their strengths and aspirations with career goals to encourage persistence.
+ Design advising processes that prioritize increased access to career development resources and achievement of key career readiness milestones (e.g. internships, leadership roles, professional networking, mentoring).
+ Establish clear communication channels and processes for students to connect with advising resources efficiently, with a focus on removing barriers and smoothing pathways.
+ Establish a messaging campaign cycle for continuing students that promotes retention by facilitating timely scheduling of advising sessions and course registration for upcoming semesters.
+ Coordinate and lead academic advising events (e.g. advising walk-ins, group registration) during peak periods and/or with target populations, as needed.
+ Work closely with student success leadership to design and implement first-year advising activities within first-year seminar courses.
Collaboration with Stakeholders:
+ Collaborate with campus stakeholders to enhance advising practices and ensure a coordinated approach to student success and retention.
+ Provide training and support to stakeholders in academic departments, enrollment management, and other functional areas regarding advising and registration processes.
+ Work closely with Career Services to implement a comprehensive career development framework into advising practices.
+ Work closely with Academic Success to support early intervention and academic recovery efforts.
+ Collaborate with the Office of Recruitment to support student advising and registration processes at New Student Orientation events.
+ Advocate for student needs and serve as a resource for faculty and staff regarding advising issues.
Data Analysis & Assessment:
+ Utilize data analytics to evaluate advising services and identify areas for improvement.
+ Implement assessment tools to measure student satisfaction and engagement with advising initiatives and achievement of intended student learning outcomes.
+ Work closely with student success leadership to evaluate student progress, identify patterns in performance disparities, and develop targeted solutions.
+ Enhance advising programs to ensure they meet the needs of today’s learners, particularly underrepresented and non-traditional populations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND CHARACTERISTICS
+ Master's degree from an accredited institution.
+ Minimum of five (5) years of experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or similar roles in higher education.
+ Demonstrated knowledge of university academic policies and curriculum requirements.
+ Experience supervising professional or student staff.
+ Strong understanding of holistic advising principles and best practices in student development.
+ Familiarity with contemporary student challenges and effective support strategies.
+ Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
+ Commitment to responding efficiently and professionally with a strong customer service approach to multiple demands from various stakeholders.
+ Dedication to providing a welcoming and supportive environment that benefits all students, regardless of background or circumstance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND CHARACTERISTICS
+ Advanced degree in higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, or a related field.
+ Experience working in a centralized advising model.
+ Knowledge of early alert systems and other student retention models.
+ Demonstrated leadership experience with a successful track record in program development.
+ Proficiency in data analysis and assessment techniques.
+ Familiarity with student information systems and success platforms.
+ Experience in developing strategic partnerships that support interdisciplinary approaches to student success.
+ Event planning and coordination experience, with the ability to present to diverse groups.
