Director of Accounting

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Accounting to manage our Accounting team and oversee critical financial processes, including the monthly close and year-end audit. This is the most senior accounting role at Artsy, overseeing all accounting operations and strategy. Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance & Corporate Development, it holds primary responsibility for global accounting policies, operations, and systems, as well as cash and foreign exchange (FX) management. The ideal candidate will bring a strategic mindset, technical expertise in U.S. GAAP, and a track record of driving efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.

What You’ll Do at Artsy:

Team Management & Coaching: Oversee and manage a team of three accounting professionals, providing mentorship, performance evaluations, and career development.

Financial Close & Reporting: Supervise the monthly financial close process, ensuring timely and accurate completion of account reconciliations, profit and loss (P&L) reviews, variance analysis, and communication with the FP&A team.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with key stakeholders across the organization to ensure accounting is integrated into cross-functional initiatives and aligned with overall company objectives.

Cash & FX Management: Improve cash flow management and foreign exchange exposure, implementing best practices for risk mitigation.

Technical Accounting & Compliance: Serve as the subject matter expert on U.S. GAAP, ensuring adherence to technical accounting standards and best practices.

Audit & Regulatory Compliance: Manage relationships with external auditors, tax authorities, and other regulatory entities, ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory reporting requirements across multiple jurisdictions.

Internal Controls & Process Optimization: Strengthen internal controls and enhance accounting processes, improving efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.

Journal Entries & Account Reconciliation: Review and approve journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness.

System Optimization: Continuously evaluate and enhance NetSuite and other accounting systems to drive operational efficiency.

Financial Forecasting Support: Work closely with the FP&A team to ensure accurate cash flow and P&L forecasting.

Tax & Cash Management: Establish and implement effective tax and cash management processes to optimize financial operations.

Strategic Planning & Execution: Contribute to the broader financial strategy by setting priorities, driving execution, and ensuring alignment with business goals.

This role is a fit for you if:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.

Extensive experience in accounting management, with a proven track record of leading accounting teams. Ideally this would include public accounting and in-house.

Strong technical proficiency in NetSuite and Excel.

Experience managing multi-country financial operations, including foreign exchange exposure and regulatory compliance.

Strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization.

Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities, enabling sound decision-making.

High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while managing multiple priorities.

Are not comfortable setting and implementing the strategy for the Accounting organisation

Do not want to manage and coach other team members

What success looks like in your first 3-6 months: 

3 months:

Work with the existing accounting team and key stakeholders across the organization to understand the accounting processes and how these fit into Artsy overall.

Complete the 2024 audit

Develop a roadmap for the focus of the accounting organisation over the coming year.

Assess the capabilities of the existing team and generate a plan for helping them reach their potential

6 months:

Drive improvements in the accounting processes thereby reducing manual tasks and improving speed and accuracy

Increase the focus of the accounting organisation on value adding activities

Implement best practices in cash and FX management

The salary range for this role is $170,000-$220,000 annually. Artsy is committed to equitable compensation practices, and your offer will depend on the relevant experience and skillset you bring to the team.
