The role you’ll contribute:
The Director of Advocacy is responsible for all aspects of government relations and community benefit activities for AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. This position will work to implement AHSM’s local and state public policy agenda; work with the AH corporate advocacy team to implement federal policy agenda; and build strong relationships with key stakeholders. The position is also responsible for directing and tracking community benefit activities within the communities we serve. This includes overseeing the development of the Community Health Needs Assessment and Community Health Plans for AHSM’s hospitals and associated facilities. Additionally, this position is responsible for directing and tracking engagement and interaction with key community agencies and businesses that help support or further the organization’s mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ. This position is responsible for producing and adhering to all federal and state requirement for the Community Health Plan process.

§ Understand the important federal and state public policy issues affecting AH.
§ Oversee and direct the AHSM Advocacy Committee.
§ Lead in the development and implementation of annual Advocacy Plans and messages.
§ Work with subject matter experts to articulate complicated federal and state policy issues on such topics as Medicare, Medicaid, not-for-profit/tax-exempt status, tax policies and government budgets to internal and external audiences including leadership, federal and state policymakers, and community leaders and organizations.
§ Monitor activity in Topeka during the legislative session, provide updates to senior leaders and represent AHSM in meetings and hearings as needed.
§ Work closely with other AH government relations leaders to proactively monitor, analyze and forecast federal and state legislative and public policy issues.
§ Work with the AH Public Policy team to proactively develop and implement issues management strategies for federal, state and local issues that impact Kansas.
§ Interface proactively and effectively with AHSM leadership on all government relations issues.
§ Coordinate meetings and visits with government/elected officials and hospital leadership/staff when appropriate.
§ Serve as AHSM liaison to policy-related organizations such as the Kansas Hospital Association and various Chambers of Commerce.
§ Develop and maintain positive relationships with key federal, state and local policy makers and their staffs.
§ Maintain high visibility for AHSM at government and community events.
§ Actively participate in policy forums and organizations.
§ Manage department budget.
§ Manage the development and publishing of the CHNA and CHP for AHSM.
§ Work with corporate and division to meet all CHNA and CHP requirements while ensuring consistency in themes, presentation and reporting.
§ Organize and manage all required committees and oversight boards needed to achieve the objectives and requirements of the CHNA/CHP.
§ Provide regular updates and reports as required and requested to senior leadership including hospital and regional executive teams and Board of Directors.
§ Serve as a representative for the organization in key community organizational meetings and collaborations.
§ Identify and work with community partners, businesses and agencies to achieve the targets of the CHP.
Qualifications
The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
· Must be a team-oriented, self-motivated professional with interpersonal, organizational and planning skills
· Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
· Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively articulate complex information in understandable terms to all levels of staff
· Proven management, collaboration and mentoring skills
· Ability to interface and communicate effectively with a broad cross-section of leadership and government/community/business leaders
· Understanding and experience with key community agencies and partners
· Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PREFERRED:
· Understanding of the CHNA/CHP process and process
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
· Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
· Fifteen or more years in government/public affairs, issues management, not-for-profit leadership and/or corporate communications
· Experience working with or within the legislative process
· Community-building experience/linkages
· Experience in marketing and business
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
· Master’s degree in a related field
