Director of Corporate Security

As the Corporate Head of Security for Coherent Corp., you will spearhead global physical security initiatives, ensuring the safety and security of our workforce and facilities worldwide. Your primary responsibility will be to mitigate risks to Coherent Corp.'s personnel and properties while ensuring compliance with all applicable government laws, orders, and policies, in alignment with the company's risk appetite and security budget. This position will be hybrid and located in proximity to one of Coherent’s main operating facilities in the U.S.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Cultural Development:

Drive the development of a security-aware culture at Coherent Corp. locations worldwide.

Budget Management:

Develop compelling business cases based on best practice data in the security industry to develop and justify future security budgets.

Performance Metrics:

Develop, collect, and analyze appropriate metrics to measure aspects of Physical Security performance.

Policy and Procedure Development:

Create, standardize, and implement policies and procedures to support the global security program. Ensure policies have suitable flexibility to accommodate the diversity of Coherent Corp. facilities, including a wide range of size, headcount, perceived and actual threats, and government regulations.

Risk Assessment and Mitigation:

Work with internal stakeholders to understand the physical security risks Coherent Corp. faces and build effective, prioritized programs to mitigate these risks within the assigned budget. Develop and maintain a schedule for conducting formal Threat and Vulnerability Assessments (TVAs) on Coherent Corp. facilities. Identify vulnerabilities and gaps in security posture, develop prioritized recommendations to mitigate risk, and provide justification and support for recommended investment in additional security measures. Proactively identify, develop, and implement additional security strategies to meet the unique needs of the Coherent Corp. business.

Security Inspections, Audits, and Investigations:

Work with relevant stakeholders to develop and maintain an effective investigations capability and process within the Security department. Ensure all physical security incidents are investigated promptly and as thoroughly as practical. Develop a process/program and ensure timely execution of security inspections and audits as required.

Training and Awareness Programs:

Develop and ensure delivery of security training and awareness programs, including Armed Aggressor Response Training, Workplace Violence Prevention training, and other physical security topics as required. This may include in-depth training topics for security staff as well as security awareness training for all employees.

Security Technology Management:

Drive the security technology roadmap, including planning for the standardization of security systems worldwide, particularly badge-access systems and camera systems.

Workplace Violence Prevention:

Critical member of the Workplace Violence Situational Assessment Team in evaluating any concerning behavior, threats, or inappropriate communications that may indicate an elevated risk of workplace violence. Define and implement appropriate actions in response to any case brought to the Situational Assessment team.

Threat & Incident Reporting:

Develop and implement an effective security threat and incident reporting system. Leverage and/or supplement existing reporting mechanisms such as EHS incident reports, Compliance hotline, and Human Resources as appropriate. Define protocols for management notification in response to a variety of security incidents.

Executive Protection:

Develop and make recommendations for an Executive Protection program as appropriate for the needs of Coherent Corp. senior executives.

Travel Security:

Implement and maintain a travel security and emergency assistance program to help protect Coherent Corp. personnel on business travel. Maintain a database of all current and planned travel to meet Duty of Care obligations to travelers, through both proactive and reactive measures in response to threats and incidents.

Guard Services Oversight:

For facilities where guard services are deemed necessary, provide guidance to site leadership including best practices, vendor recommendations, and policy expectations to ensure the guard service is both security-effective and cost-effective.

Mentorship, Competence Building and Team Development:

Mentor internal security team members. Build internal competence and expertise across the spectrum of Physical Security responsibilities. Identify and develop relationships with external partners to supplement internal knowledge and capabilities as needed.

Education & Experience

15+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience.  Experience should include a balanced mixture of law enforcement or military police/security service; corporate security experience; and general business (non-security) experience in manufacturing, engineering, or administrative functions.  7+ years diversified leadership, planning, communication, organization and people motivation skill (or equivalent experience) Bachelor’s degree in security, administration of justice, engineering, or business discipline.  Master’s degree preferred. Experience with firearms preferred.  This role is not an armed security position, but may require supervision of armed guards / armed guard services at some point in the future.

Working Conditions

Typical workday is full time during regular scheduled hours.  Must also be able to respond on short notice to assist on any domestic or international security incident if required.  Security incidents can occur any time, any day, anywhere in the world. Occasional late nights or weekends as necessary to conduct assessment of threats and security posture of Coherent Corp. facilities across full 24-hour spectrum of potential threats.  Travel ~35% both domestically and internationally. 

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the facilities.

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp. Corporate EHS standards.

Quality and Environmental Responsibilities

Depending on location, this position may be responsible for the execution and maintenance of the ISO 9000, 9001, 14001 and/or other applicable standards that may apply to the relevant roles and responsibilities within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
