As a Director of Design Engineering with PCB Piezotronics, Inc.,you will lead an area of the business from the product development side and the personnel management side. Significant understanding of both product design and design for manufacturing for multiple models/product lines. Researches, designs, modifies and initiates the development of engineering research projects, new products, general sensor technology, design methods, and departmental procedures. Able to present and articulate the strategic direction of technology development, new products, and the overall health of PCB’s New Product Introduction (NPI) process. As an integral member of the Senior Leadership Team, provides professional direction and leadership to all levels of the organization.

Additional Duties: 

Works with other departments on sensor design, test methods, calibration procedures, ISO-9001 documentation, company policies, etc. Will always follow PCB processes,but will work with others to champion ideas to improve these processes.Leads a team of design engineers, drafters, engineering technicians, and department administrators to achieve organizational goals.Champion of the New Product Introduction process including the NMI (New Model Introduction) and the Design Review Gate process(s). Leads the successful introduction of new products including the design of the new product, rolling it out to manufacturing, addressing first time build concerns, and documenting for later reference.Thoroughly understands the importance of resource allocation and provides guidance and direction on project priorities accordingly. Maintains and enhances a department competency matrix through strategic hiring, outside collaborations, and training in support of the company’s strategic growth areas.Competent leader of how to “manage risk” of new designs so as to limit cost and responsiveness problems by planning at the idea/concept stage of the New Product Development Process. Identifies potential problems at the New Model Introduction and Design Review stages and corrects them to avoid manufacturing issues or customer interruptions.Researches, analyzes and studies new and existing products to gain a true understanding of how they work, what causes certain performance characteristics, how design affects manufacturing processes, and how design will affect cost to manufacture. Uses the information gained to propose new materials, designs and processes to improve PCB’s market position. Drives continuous improvement in technology by scheduling and managing new projects based on this learning.Develops and maintains a technology roadmap that aligns with PCB’s product roadmaps and the company’s strategy for future growth. Through the R&D group research various sensor theory/designs and associated technology, facility enhancements, and testing methods to support the technology roadmap. Benchmarks competitors’ technology and specifications to help enhance technology and offer input to the Product Groups for future development planning and direction.Forms a mutual relationship with Sales in order to build technical credibility and to optimize new sensor designs through onsite customer visits (voice of customer), and onsite troubleshooting of customer sensor/testing issues.Fully develops relationships and works with Manufacturing Engineers, Planners, Purchasers, and Manufacturing Technicians to become capable of writing effective and common procedures, Bill of Materials, and Routers to achieve “flawless launch” of new products and long-term manufacturing capability.In support of manufacturing efficiency, product quality, and profitability (Design for Manufacturability). Leads new product development using lean concepts, 6 Sigma, error proofing, and continuous improvement tools.Thoroughly understands and manages engineering budget and financial information in order to support company business goals.As the primary point of contact for Design Engineering performs the following tasks:Leads the Design Engineering discussion in the monthly operations review with Amphenol management.With the support of Finance and HR, leads the annual submission of PCB’s R&D Tax Credit Survey.Collaborates with Amphenol’s Technical Directors to align skills, capabilities, experience, and learnings.Attends and supports tradeshows and seminars as required.Authors/manages technical pieces in support of NPI and new technology.Performs other duties as required for the efficient operation of the Design Engineering Department and PCB as a whole.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: BS in Engineering. MS and PhD preferred. PE and MBA usefulExperience: At least 15 years of experience in the field, both design/manufacturing and leading engineering teams.Significant computer skills and an expert user of Microsoft Office software. Thorough understanding and experience in 3D modeling, dimensional stack up, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT), machining technologies, assembly processes, lean techniques (design and manufacturing), 6 Sigma, statistical process control, design of experiments, error proofing, and design for manufacturing. Good understanding of both electrical and mechanical design inputs.Travel Requirement: As Needed
