The Office of Development as part of University Advancement has a mission to maximize philanthropic impact at the University of Oregon. We do this by identifying, connecting, and engaging alumni and friends around the globe with their passions to advance the vision and priorities of the university.
Position Summary
The Director of Development works as part of Development to promote university fundraising priorities and image to alumni, parents, and friends of the university. The director will be assigned to a specific unit and is responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of current donors, as well as the identification and qualification of new prospects. This position will concentrate on gifts in the major gift ($100k+) range and help build the pipeline for future major donors over the duration of the campaign.
This position is externally facing, requiring frequent travel, thoughtful communication, and interaction with donors and donor prospects. The director collaborates with colleagues in the Law School, Development, and across the university to identify new prospects and strategically cultivate alumni, parents, and friends. The director will be responsible for setting and executing fundraising goals that align with the future strategic plan of the Law School and the University’s strategic plan, Oregon Rising. The director will be measured by individual portfolio performance and the overall fundraising performance of the Law School on an annual basis.
Reporting jointly to the Dean of the School of Law and the Associate Vice President for Development, Academics, this position leads the School of Law development program and is responsible for managing all fundraising activity, including representing the school in campaign planning, development initiatives, and achieving cash and commitment fundraising goals and strategies in conjunction with leadership in the college/school/unit and Development. Traveling within Oregon as well as to cities in other states up to 50% of the time is an essential expectation of this position.
This position is jointly funded by the School of Law and University Advancement.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of skills and experience.
• Three years of professional frontline fundraising experience or five years combined experience in development and in a closely related field such as corporate sales.
• One year of experience as a permanent supervisor or three years of lead work and mentorship of junior staff.
Professional Competencies
• Working with donors and prospects: Extensive experience in prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, and solicitation, with a demonstrated ability to build relationships with donors and prospects, including those who have not been engaged or connected to the university. Ability to maximize gift potentials for outright and estate gifts, educate new donors and prospects about major gift philanthropy, and leverage existing and future volunteer leaders towards giving.
• Portfolio management and systems: Ability to identify top prospects and strategies for a portfolio, including leveraging data and analysis tools and partnership with UA prospect development to optimize activity and portfolio makeup; prioritize prospects and regions while fully engaging with a robust portfolio; and provide constructive feedback on prospect management systems and structures.
• Professionalism and citizenship: Ability to establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and others as appropriate, and contribute ideas in interactions and discussions with management, peers, and campus partners. This includes actively collaborating with colleagues as well as communicating in a positive and proactive manner with fellow development officers, leadership, and Prospect Management, Prospect Development, and Data Analytics staff.
• Institutional navigation and industry knowledge: Ability to represent the university's history, mission, demographics, faculty, current programs, departments, and culture, persuasively articulate how the UO distinguishes itself from peer institutions. Competence in connecting mission and objectives across departments into donor strategies, and extensive knowledge of best practices, trends, current strategies, and other information relevant to philanthropy in higher education development.
• Management and supervision of employees: Demonstrated ability to manage people and/or programs, including recognizing and leveraging strengths of individual team members; navigating performance concerns and workplace conflict; setting metrics and goals; and customizing onboarding, expectations, and career planning for all team members.
• Volunteer management: Ability to set the philanthropic agenda of a board; recruit and effectively work with volunteers in setting philanthropic priorities for solicitation, stewardship, and relationship building; and work closely with academic and administrative partners on board member engagement, giving, and decision making.
• Academic leadership: Strong ability to position the Dean to be a fundraising leader and leverage the expertise of deans and faculty members to cultivate and solicit donors, focus fundraising activity to meet metrics and engage donors, and ensure academic leaders understand the role of development. Ability to identify and work with the most appropriate academic partners for a given prospect, encourage academic partners to focus their efforts on top prospects, and exercise high-level judgment to maximize the impact of partnerships on giving. Skilled in establishing confidence with academic leadership to lead strategy and represent the interests of the program as well as delivering post-meeting feedback and reflection.
• Strategic planning: Ability to communicate and articulate how individual initiatives and programmatic direction fit into overall advancement strategy, as well as use 12-month and multi-year projections and strategic planning tools to reach goals and anticipate trends, gaps, and priorities.
• Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Ability to interact, communicate, and work effectively with individuals, recognizing and respecting the many and varied identities of each person.
• Ability to travel.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in higher education development that provided an understanding of the nature of a professional school and research university.
• Demonstrated experience working effectively with volunteer boards.
• Advanced degree, especially in Law.
