Director of Nursing Education & Professional Development

General Summary:

Responsible for managing and directing the in-service nursing education and training programs for nurses and direct care nursing staff throughout the health system.  Identifies development and training needs, develops programming, and monitors their effectiveness.  Supervises nurse educators and trainers. Ensures conformance with current nursing practices and procedures, regulatory and accreditation standards, and the incorporation of evidence-based best practices.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Work requires in-depth knowledge of theories of teaching, learning and evaluation, substantial knowledge of psychiatric nursing and related areas of instruction, experience developing programming in a large healthcare system, excellent communication, presentation, and management skills, and strong critical thinking skills – acquired through a Master’s degree in Education or Nursing with an education focus plus at least 5 years of psychiatric nursing experience, two of which much be in education and training.  Will consider BSN’s within one year of obtaining Master’s degree.     Must possess current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland at the time of appointment and continuously while in position.  Work requires high level of analytical ability sufficient to plan, design and develop curricula to meet organization and unit/program needs, assess training needs of programs and individuals, and develop strategies to effectively teach a variety of adult learners. Work requires advanced interpersonal skills sufficient to function as an effective trainer/coach, consultant, and director/manager (51-80% of work time). Position requires coordinating and managing in-service education, meeting deadlines, responding promptly to critical organizational and clinical incidents, and managing the demands of multiple projects, which very frequently produces a great deal of mental/visual fatigue.
