Director of Operations, Biomedical Engineering (BME)

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine

seeking candidates for the Director of Operations.

BME Department at UVA was founded in 1967 as a joint program of the School of Medicine and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Today, there are 29 core BME faculty members and more than 30 joint faculty members from multiple schools and departments. We have a student population of more than 125 graduate students and nearly 300 undergraduate students from across the country and the world. The BME building, built with support from a Whitaker Foundation award, is centrally located in the School of Medicine complex and is adjacent to the University’s Cardiovascular Research Center, the Couric Cancer Center, and the Carter Immunology Center. Current BME research foci are (a) systems biology, computational modeling, and biomedical data science, (b) cell and tissue engineering, and (c) biomedical imaging. These technologies are often applied to cardiovascular disease, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders, and infectious and neurological diseases.

The Director of Operations is responsible, either personally, collaboratively, or through delegation of responsibilities, for directing and managing the department's daily operations, including administrative, financial, human resources, and educational operations supporting the department’s academic and research missions. The Director of Operations works collaboratively with the department chair and faculty to address operational concerns, resolve issues, and advocate for departmental priorities and initiatives. They supervise a team of employees in carrying out these responsibilities and are the primary liaison between the department, school, and the broader university administration.

Responsibilities:

Develops and assists in implementing short- and long-term strategic goals (including administrative, financial, staffing, and space) that align with department goals in partnership with the department chair and departmental leadership.

Serves on the department senior leadership team, is an active advisor to this group, and works to carry out business operations with direction from this team.

Collaborates with engineering, medicine, and university partners in graduate and undergraduate programs, human resources, finance, information technology, and facilities management.

Formulates, improves and ensures departmental procedures are in place in accordance with the School of Engineering, School of Medicine, and University policies and governmental regulations.

Serves as senior fiscal officer for the department: responsible for the department’s financial reports and financial information accuracy.  Also responsible for ensuring that fiscal activities comply with school and university financial policies and guidelines and that appropriate internal controls are in place.

In collaboration with department leadership, develop the annual budgets in alignment with the department's strategic plan.  Oversees the financials and manages expenditures within the approved budgets.

Hires, mentors, and manages the performance of department staff.  Develops and implements staffing plans to appropriately resource priority programs.

Ensures completion of workflows such as faculty and staff merit increases, faculty promotion and tenure, faculty, staff, student hiring and onboarding, and annual evaluations. 

Promotes the efficient use of space within the department by providing feedback and recommendations to the department chair regarding the use of space, potential reassignment, relinquishment, or redesign of space to accommodate current and future needs.

Works collaboratively with the Research Facility Manager and faculty to respond to space surveys and manage the safety and cleanliness of department and laboratory space.

Collaborates with the IT Manager to meet the department's IT needs and ensures appropriate support from partner groups.

Remains current on emergency preparedness activities in the School and the University.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: Eight years of increasingly responsible experience. Master's degree is typical and may substitute for some experience. Relevant exempt level experience may substitute for a degree.

Preferred Requirements:

Education: Master’s Degree in a relevant field

Experience: Two years of staff supervisory experience

Physical Demands:

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. Duties will be performed on-site and not eligible for hybrid work.

Anticipated Hiring Range:

$95,000 - $115,000 and will be commensurate with education and experience.
