JOB SUMMARY
The Director of External Relations is highly effective in donor cultivation and market opportunities working closely with the President & CEO and staff to support and illuminate the mission and goals of TURN. Will conduct prospect research, prospective donors, encourage current donor relations, connect with other door openers and donor stewardship to grow donor assets to achieve TURN’s annual and long-range goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In coordination with the executive team, develop, plan, and implement a comprehensive development strategy supporting TURN’s organizational priorities, including grants, special events, capital campaigns, major gifts, planned to give, corporate and foundation giving, and growth of the annual fund through direct mail and online fundraising.Collaborate with the finance team to monitor the implementation of all grant/funding awards outside program grants and contract to ensure compliance with funder or contractual obligations; prepare and submit grant reports according to funder requirements.Oversee all aspects of relationship management with funders and donors, ensuring prompt communication, accurate proposal submissions, executive approval of commitments, appropriate recognition and publicity, and fulfillment of reporting obligations.Work directly with donors on special restrictions and large named gifts to ensure a positive donor experience.Develop an annual communications plan for donors, funders, volunteers, and external constituents, collaborating with others to ensure streamlined messaging and consistent branding across all external communications, media releases, and responses.Collaborate with members of TURN’s Board of Directors and key volunteers to maximize their fundraising efforts.Follow TURN policies and procedures for gift acceptance, gift processing, record keeping, tax documentation, and donor/funder acknowledgment, ensuring compliance with IRS regulations.Monitor fundraising data and trends; provide statistical analysis and present progress reports to the executive team and Board of Directors.Develop budgets, strategic plans, and short- and long-range objectives for all areas of responsibility, integrating these operational and financial objectives with overall organizational goals.Serve as an active member of the Leadership Team, supporting the COO, VP of Finance, and CEO on strategic initiatives as needed.Complete other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree required.7+ years in fundraising with a proven track record in securing significant funding.Proven track record of securing significant funding (in the $400,000 - $3 million+ range) from diverse sources, including foundations, corporations, government, and major gifts from individuals.Experience in major gift cultivation, grant writing, grants and contracts management, and special events.CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) designation strongly preferred.Proven ability to construct, articulate, and implement annual strategic donor development plans.Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders including residents, team members, volunteers, and professional and business leaders.Demonstrated success in cultivating and managing relationships with multiple donor sources.Knowledge of gift-related policies, ethical standards set by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and current fundraising trends, including the use of social media tools.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Exceptional interpersonal, communication and administrative skills.Ability to work independently.Strong connections to the funding community in San Diego, Fresno, and Santa Clara.Proficiency in MS Office, database management i.e.. E-Tapestry (Donor Perfect preferred), project management software, and social media platforms.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
