Director of Student Affairs

The University of Maryland Carey School of Law is seeking a Director of Student Affairs. From the moment students arrive on campus for Orientation to the moment students walk across the stage during Graduation, the Office of Student Affairs (OSA)is dedicated to enhancing the educational, social, and professional opportunities of our law students. To this end, OSA oversees student life at Maryland Carey Law. Reporting directly to the Associate Dean for Student Services, the Director of Student Affairsis primarily responsible for overseeing the Peer Advisor Program, ensuring that reasonable accommodations are provided to qualified law students, counseling students in distress, managing the Maryland Carey Law House Cup, and developing initiatives to enhance student care, well-being, resilience, and a sense of belonging. The position requires an ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. The position also requires the ability to retain current, comprehensive information about academic and co-curricular programming, student organizations, and professional and health counseling resources. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a time conscious manner are essential to the position.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Serve as the law school’s liaison to the Office of Educational Support and Disability Services to ensure that reasonable accommodations are provided to qualified law students as mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).Oversee the development, implementation, and expansion ofthe Peer Advisor program. Serve as the primary point of contact for students in distress. Referring students who need mental health support to appropriate resources. Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Student Services to develop and implement the Maryland Carey Law House Cup. Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the House Cup and serve as the primary point of contact.Support the Associate Dean for Student Services with the planning and execution of Orientation activities for all incoming JD students (first year, transfer, and visiting), returning students, and LLM students.Support the Associate Dean for Student Services with the planning and execution of the law school’s Hooding Ceremony and other law school graduation events. Taking the lead in coordinating the law school’s participation in University Commencement and/or other university wide graduation events.In consultation with theAssociate Dean for Student Services, plan, develop, and implement student leadership activities, including coordinating faculty and senior administration participation.Supervise and mentor the Assistant Director of Student Affairs who is primarily responsible for advising and supporting student organizations, co-curricular teams, and journals.Work with the Associate Dean of Student Services to plan and execute programming for students such as the Bringing Your Best Self to Law School series. Primarily responsible for the planning of evening and weekend activities for our Part-Time Evening Program students; offering a consistent calendar of events.Develop initiatives to enhance student care, well-being, resilience, and a sense of belonging. Organize wellness-related events, prepare and analyze data related to well-being at the law school, and serve on the Wellness Committee.Coordinate outreach and support to incoming transfer and visiting students.Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Student Services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:Bachelor’s degree in a related field. J.D. degree from an ABA approved law school preferred.

Experience:Seven (7) years of progressive experience working with students. Master's degree or additional certification in social work, counseling, student affairs, education administration, or related field can be substituted for two years of experience. Juris Doctorate can be substituted for three years of experience.

Supervisory Experience:Four (4) years of work coordination, training, or supervision.

Other:Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat.Skill in using standard office equipment, in composing a variety of correspondence, in managing filing systems, in gathering and summarizing information, in maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive matters with discretion and tact, and in interacting with faculty, students and staff in a courteous and efficient manner.Ability to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision.Skill in continuously seeking to improve the quality of services and processes.Leadership and team building skills.Knowledge of best practices in student affairs.Leadership, coaching, and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships.Willingness to confer, communicate and collaborate with multiple law school and UMB constituencies.

HIRING RANGE: $99,000 - $110,000 per year (Commensurate with education and experience)
