Director of The Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology
The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Department of Medicine is seeking candidates for the Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The Department of Medicine (DOM) is among the top departments in National Institutes of Health funding with approximately $225 million annually in sponsored research and two internal medical residency programs with the Osler Medical Residency being one of the foremost internal medicine residency programs in the country. The DOM has multiple clinical locations including The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Howard County General Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospital and Suburban Hospital in the greater Baltimore/DC metro area as well as , outpatient clinic sites across Maryland and Washington DC. The Department of Medicine is the largest department in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine with 18 divisions and over 3,000 faculty members, nurses, staffers and trainees and is an integral part of Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions (JHMI), which is a partnership between the School of Medicine (SOM) and The Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH). The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is proudly known for its proactive commitment and seminal innovations in alleviating the barriers caused by diseases and the condition s of the digestive tract and liver. The Division has a prestigious history of laboratory and clinical research, teaching, and service activities . Our faculty have active research funding totaling approximatel y $10M annually. Our mission is to advance the understanding, diagnosis, treatmen t and prevention of gastrointestinal and liver disease. Areas of research include early detection of pancreatic cancers, extracellular matrix biology, GI biomarkers, inflammatory bowel diseases, autoimmune liver diseases, and inflammatory bowel disease genetic s . The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is ranked by the U.S. News & World Report as among the best in the nation . In 2025, Newsweek ranked the Knoll North location the top Ambulatory Surgery Center in the nation. The Division is composed of 53 Faculty, 25 Clinical Fellows, 17 Post-Doctoral Fellows, 15 Advanced Practice Providers and 149 staffers. Our ACGME accredited GI fellowship consists of 16 fellows. The Division also has advanced fellowships for Transplant Hepatology, Therapeutic Endoscopy, IBD, Motility and Pancreas. The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology has a large, sprawling clinical practice that covers large parts of Maryland and Washington DC. The Division provides inpatient and on-call services at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Bayview Medical Center and Sibley Memorial Hospital. Our outpatient practice consists of 7 locations, 3 infusion centers, 3 outpatient hospital Endoscopy units and 4 Ambulatory Surgical centers. In 2024, the Division's Faculty, Fellows and Advanced Practice Providers completed more than 87,000 unique patient encounters across our centers and is projected to complete 30,000 cases this fiscal year of 2025. The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology holds 5 endowed chai rs , i ncluding the Golden Paulson Endowment, which is designed to support the Division Director. The Director is the spokesperson for the faculty of the Division. Th e Division Director will be responsible for recruiting, appointing and promoting new and internal faculty; overseeing educational, clinical and research programs; and planning short and long-term strategic growth; with excellent interpersonal skills with students, staffers and faculty members. Candidate must possess an outstanding record of accomplishments in teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate needs to have the demonstrated capacity to foster an environment in which excellence in teaching, research and scholarship can flourish, as well as experience and interest in developing and leading clinical programs. Successful candidates will have a record of innovative and effective administrative and fiscal leadership, as well as national stature in academic internal medicine. Candidates must have a record consistent with appointment as an Associate or Full Professor of Medicine or equivalent department. Must possess an MD or equivalent with board certification in Gastroenterology and be eligible for licensure in the state of Maryland and U.S. employment.
