Ph.D. in a subject taught in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Five years' experience teaching at the College level. Knowledge of the theory and practice of post-secondary education and of general education programs nationally, and the ability to synthesize that theory and knowledge into policy recommendations. Ability to work collaboratively with Faculty and other administrators on educational and curricular matters. Demonstrated success managing a multi-person team. Attention to detail, ability to foresee and forestall complications in the administration of educational programs, and ability to work on multiple projects at one time. Excellent communication skills, including writing and editing. Excellent judgment, discretion, and political skills are necessary, since the position must balance the needs of several constituencies (faculty, students, and administrators) that have very different needs and priorities.

Position Description:
The Program in General Education is a cornerstone of the Harvard College curriculum, required of all 6,500 undergraduates in the College and taught by faculty members across the Faculty of Arts and Sciences as well as across Harvard University. Gen Ed courses fall into four categories: Aesthetics and Culture, Ethics and Civics, Histories, Societies and Individuals, and Science and Technology in Society. The courses in the program transcend disciplinary divisions and explicitly connect the subjects students study to the world beyond the classroom.
The Program supports approximately 65 courses each year and manages the College's distribution and quantitative reasoning requirements. The Program staff provide advice to students regarding appropriate courses to complete their degrees, and pedagogical support and training for the faculty, teaching fellows and teaching assistants teaching in the program.
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education, Academic Programs and Policy, the Director leads the Program in General Education and manages the seven-person office supporting the Program and the courses therein.
The Director will
+ provide strategic leadership for the Program in General Education to ensure that it continues to innovate and respond to student and faculty needs;
+ oversee employee hiring and performance, and develop a strong and diverse team capable of working with students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds;
+ lead the program office in providing comprehensive administrative and logistical support to Gen Ed faculty and teaching staff;
+ work closely with the Faculty Standing Committee on General Education and individual instructors to recruit faculty/departments to teach in Gen Ed and to design and review courses for the program so that they are consistent with the goals of the program;
+ work closely with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education, Academic Programs and Policy and the directors of other College academic programs to increase collaboration among the programs and further align the curriculum into a cohesive whole;
+ oversee a system to periodically review Gen Ed courses and assess the broader impact of the program; and
+ oversee a $1M+ operating budget and $5M instructional budget.
