Director of Web Strategy
ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Director of Web Strategy in the Communications & Marketing Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month. 

The ACLU’s Communications & Marketing Department team focuses on growing our existing audiences and acquiring new audiences by smartly using digital channels to reach and inspire them to take action. We create rich and compelling written, multimedia, and graphic design content that are used in key email, texting, social, merchandise, and paid media programs that help raise money, get our message out into the world, and mobilize existing and new supporters.

WHAT YOU'LL DO 

Reporting to the Head of Digital Engagement , the Director of Web Strategy will help develop and execute digital web content strategies that increase on-site interaction goals, as well as a  data-driven messaging strategy aimed at expanding our organizational reach and increasing leads for monetary or volunteer activation. The Director of Web Strategy  will also manage a team of Digital Producers and work to create a high-functioning, efficient and impactful team.

YOUR DAY TO DAY Work with stakeholders and senior staff to develop and oversee the overall content and engagement strategy for ACLU.org and any related or ancillary sites Create, execute, and maintain, in close collaboration with product leaders in the Technology Department , a strategic roadmap designed to optimize engagement on the site and convert for donation and action Work with the Director of Digital Campaigns, the Director of Social Media, and the Technology Department to design and implement seamless user journeys and experiences for ACLU supporters. Collaborate with the ACLU’s Director of Creative Services and other stakeholders to align content production for the website with broader organizational objectives, including revenue generation Partner with the Technology Department to design, develop, and improve site elements and exist as the primary connection between between those team and Communications Manage the Digital Production team including full-time employees and contractors; serve as a great manager in advocating for their needs, giving feedback and identifying new opportunities for growth for their direct reports Work as the key stakeholder with the Technology Department to ideate on, define and test out design improvements to the publishing systems and platforms powering ACLU properties Take on special content-heavy projects and ideate with peer teams on the requirements, structure and goals for a project; successfully publish projects and report back on usage and impact Own and manage the digital production workflow including how stakeholders and content creation partners “plug in” to that workflow in order to move content pieces through all stages of production Work in a data-driven way by using data dashboards and testing insights to adjust and optimize content strategies; utilize experimentation and test-driven strategies to learn new tactics for digital content publishing; identify when data access is incomplete and work with Analytics leaders in the Technology Department to fill these gaps Manage a training program in order to bring new internal content creators up-to-speed on the publishing system and how to follow best practices Liaise closely with, and possibly manage, third-party vendors and contractors who supplement the Digital Production team efforts; this includes managing budget, projects and assessing impact upon renewal of vendor contracts Ideate on innovative and compelling content-heavy campaigns (either written or multimedia) in order to engage supporters to take action and support the ACLU Act as an in-house domain-expert when it comes to tactics related to strategic content creation and publishing on the website Represent the Digital Production team and coordinate with the Technology partners to communicate the overall website strategy across the organization in cross-team meetings and collaborations; this includes reporting back to the team on organizational activities they should be aware of, giving updates on production processes, and sharing data reports that impact key objectives Help the organization develop content engagement tactics and strategy that increase on-site engagement and content impact; ensure these tactics are being followed Provide leadership and guidance to establish shared goals and publish high quality, high-performing content across the ACLU and its affiliates sites Embrace audience-driven segmentation and testing in order to better define audiences and establish an audience-specific content publishing strategy; this includes liaising with peer teams to ensure campaigns promote content in ways that line up to the desired audience Contribute to a culture of continuous, data-driven learning and evaluation Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned FUTURE ACLU'ERS WILL  Be committed to advancing the mission of the ACLU Center and embed the principles of equity, inclusion and belonging in their work by demonstrating commitment to diversity with an approach that respects and values multiple perspectives Be committed to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and conflicts WHAT YOU'LL BRING A passion for web strategy, content, and marketing Experience managing WordPress and/or PHP-based sites is required Deep experience in technical SEO including on-page and off-page SEO, sitemaps, JavaScript indexing, linking, redirects, keyword research, etc. Deep experience managing a roadmap and timelines. Providing direction, guidance, and QC both within a team and across an organization, including direct and indirect reports focused on creative, content, operations, and optimization for conversion Strong familiarity with web analytics and web performance metreporting The ability to work well with ambiguity and lead projects to completion Proven experience in executing successful web marketing and organic growth strategies Excellent verbal, writing and interpersonal communication skills Strong people management skills; experience leading and guiding teams of people Strong attention to detail, ability to write and deliver work product under deadlines, and commitment to high quality standards Strong experience with web publishing Experience with multimedia publishing Understanding of trends and best practices for engaging digital content preferred Collaboration qualities, ability to work in a dynamic environment with a fast-paced and passionate team preferred COMPENSATION The ACLU is committed to equity, transparency, and clarity in pay. Consistent with our compensation philosophy, there is a set salary for each role based on geographic work location.
