Director Regulatory Strategy
**Job Summary** The Director, Regulatory Strategy will report to the VP, Rates and Regulatory Strategy and will develop, oversee and drive the successful enterprise-wide execution of regulatory strategy and public policy, while developing and leveraging external partnerships with national associations and peer utilities. This leadership role will work closely and collaborate with the NiSource Leadership Team to ensure regulatory strategy is aligned with corporate goals and strategic operating plans. **Essential Functions** + Monitor current and emergent regulatory and legislative issues and trends to evaluate potential impact. + Develop proactive, effective, and best-practice driven solutions to influence regulatory policy and optimize cost recovery mechanisms. + Develop regulatory strategies to optimize regulatory recovery and achieve NiSource’s corporate goals, strategic objectives and desired financial results. + Lead efforts to establish NiSource regulatory priorities and advocacy posture, based on internal business partner and stakeholder input, regulatory and political environment, and external drivers. + Design, develop and implement strategy, policies, and programs to enhance the regulatory reputation of the organization. + Drive enterprise-wide alignment by identifying differences in regulatory recovery mechanisms across the six Operating Companies and work with Regulatory Policy teams to develop plans and monitor progress to enhance alignment. + Deliver a progressive regulatory curriculum to our business partners, new employees and others across NiSource. + Support VP, Rates and Regulatory Strategy, and Executive Vice President and Group Utilities President, in the development of strategic roadmaps required to modernize the regulatory framework and drive needed policy and legislative changes. + Prepare regulatory and legislative update meeting materials utilized both by Senior Leaders and, at times the Senior Director, to communicate regulatory and legislative updates to NiSource’s Board of Directors and/or Board Committees. + Provide regulatory and policy input to business leaders in Corporate Strategy, Business Planning and Environmental Sustainability + Foster and manage strategic partnerships with federal and state regulatory commissioners and policymakers to establish NiSource as a partner and to assist in shaping regulatory policy initiatives. + Represent the organization in various regulatory and industry external affairs efforts, ensuring each is aligned with our corporate business objectives, advancing our corporate vision, and fostering strong relationship with our external stakeholders. + Assume lead role in enhancing NiSource’s national presence and reputation by representing NiSource as a panelist, committee member, and attendee at National Association of Regulatory Commissioners, American Gas Association and Edison Electric Institute events, and other similar organizations through partnership with peer utilities across the United States. + Establish and maintain relationships with other regulated utilities, directly and through industry associations and events, in order to influence the development of favorable state and federal energy + Leads diverse team of qualified individuals with authority to hire, terminate, promote, demote, coach, develop and performance manage + Other duties as assigned **Required Qualifications For Position** + Bachelor's Degree BS or BA degree in business, economics, legal or other related discipline + Ten or more years’ experience in regulatory affairs, regulatory execution, government affairs, industry relations, communications or a related field. Experience developing relationships and networks across NiSource and the utility industry to ensure overall business needs are met. + Five years of experience leading other leaders and driving execution across organizations + 4-6 years Relevant Sector Experience: Policy experience in a relevant industry including energy or utilities with a focus on regulated industries. Significant knowledge and understanding of legislative and regulatory processes. + 4-6 years Leadership Experience: Proven inspirational, yet pragmatic leader that holds direct reports and their teams accountable for results. Experience leading and overseeing multiple disciplines in a matrixed organization. Strong focus on talent development and succession planning. + 4-6 years Network/Relationship-Building: History of building and maintaining strong relationships at the state or federal level, including, specifically with state or federal regulatory commissions and agencies of jurisdiction as well as national associations and peer utilities. + Excellent written and oral communication skills are required to represent NiSource internally and externally. + Must possess highly effective interpersonal skills to interface with state and federal commissioners, staff and other stakeholders. + Excellent analytical skills and creative thinking skills are required to direct and oversee activities related to evaluation of strategic options. + Must possess broad understanding of NiSource strategy and business practices, the workings of the wholesale and retail energy markets, as well as the federal and state regulatory landscape. + Demonstrated success of building good working relationships with stakeholders and colleagues both internal and external to the organization. + Demonstrated knowledge of principles of management, finance, budgeting and supervision. + Regulatory process experience (strategic planning, testimony development, discovery, negotiations, etc.) + Must reside within territory + Ability to work after hours and weekends as needed + 10-30% travel, depending on location (conferences in Columbus every other month, monthly travel for 2 nights) **Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position** + Advanced degree in Business, Economics or Law + The preceding description is not designed to be a complete list of all duties and responsibilities required of the position. **Work Authorization** Authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship. **Inclusion & Diversity** Value inclusion within your day to day responsibilities by respecting others perspectives/convictions, engaging others opinions, creating a safe environment where people, ideas, and opinions are valued within your Team/Customers and external partners.
