Who we are looking forReporting to the Head, Social Performance, Asia Pacific (APAC), the Director, Social Performance, Australia is a newly created role; to provide leadership across Newmont’s Australia-wide portfolio of Tier 1 operations and projects.
You will be part of the Social Performance leadership team and develop and implement approaches that strengthen community relationships and create a lasting positive impact.
You will implement social performance strategies that enable business success, and achieve Newmont’s Environmental Social and Governance goals through effective community engagement practices, social and human rights impact assessments, management of associated risks and opportunities (including those involving business partners) and acting as the subject matter expert on social risks for the region.
You will be dedicated to strengthening community relationships by supporting Social Performance teams across Australia to build robust feedback mechanisms and implementing programs that respond to community needs
You will support the operationalization of Newmont’s Social Performance Standards to drive better ways of working, and develop plans to mitigate risks and seize opportunities, while ensuring alignment to team and business goals.
Other responsibilities will be to: Provide leadership of the Newmont’s Australian Social Performance teams, to develop, implement and manage systematic social performance and community relations programsSupport implementation of Newmont’s Social Performance Standards including but not limited to stakeholder relationship management, community development, human rights, Indigenous Peoples, and social aspect related to the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM)Lead the development of plans and activities that support improved social performance across Newmont’s Operations, Projects and HubsRepresent Social Performance on key Studies and Projects to support the continuing operations and growth of Newmont AustraliaWork cross-functionally to implement social performance related programs and risk controls including local employment, local procurement, human rights, cultural heritage, participatory monitoring, and stakeholder engagementLead compliance, assurance and governance activities associated with social performanceIdentify, negotiate and implement agreements, commitments and partnerships to support land access, indigenous participation and preserve cultural heritage. Implement social performance and risk activities against performance targetsServe as the social risk subject matter expert for Newmont AustraliaDevelop and implement region-specific community investment and development programs aligned with Enterprise frameworks and local community needs and priorities, in partnership with External RelationsMonitor social performance events, trends, risks, and performance to identify gaps and develop action plans that address performance improvementsSupport investigations and development of actions and tracking actionsRepresent Newmont at key state and national forums and industry associationsEnsure requirements are met for sustainability reporting, e.g., Annual Sustainability Report and Climate ReportThe successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, demonstrate a confident interpersonal ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, paired with a deep understanding of best practice in mining social performance.
You will also possess the following: Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Social Performance, Community Relations or relevant disciplineDemonstrated experience within the mining industry leading the development of programs to support host and indigenous communitiesExperience in delivering community engagement and investment activities with internal stakeholders and external partners Ability to manage complex and sensitive issuesUnderstanding and experience of ESG reportingUnderstanding of consultation processes to support permitting and approvals in an Australian context
This will be a permanent, full-time position either based out of the Newmont Perth or the Newmont Brisbane office (other Newmont Australian hub locations may be considered). Regular travel to Newmont’s APAC region operations in Australia and will be required as will ad-hoc broader national/international travel.
