The Security Dispatcher serves as the vital communications hub for Belmont University Campus Security. This position is responsible for receiving and processing emergency and non-emergency calls for service within the university community, dispatching Campus Security Officers and other appropriate resources, maintaining accurate records, and providing essential support to field units and the university community. The Dispatcher plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and in maintaining a positive and helpful presence.

Call Taking and Processing:

Answer incoming telephone calls, including emergency lines and the main security line, in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner, representing Belmont University positively.Gather accurate and essential information from callers, often under stressful and emotional circumstances involving students, faculty, staff, and visitors.Determine the nature and urgency of the call and prioritize accordingly, considering the unique needs of a university environment.Utilize established protocols and questioning techniques to elicit critical details such as location on campus, nature of the incident (e.g., medical emergency, safety concern, facility issue), and any potential hazards.Accurately enter call information into the department's Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.

Dispatching:

Dispatch Belmont University Campus Security Officers to the correct locations on campus based on established procedures and the nature of the incident.Maintain constant radio contact with Campus Security Officers, providing updates, relaying pertinent information (e.g., student information, building layouts), and ensuring their safety.Monitor the status and location of field units to ensure efficient deployment and response times across the university grounds.Coordinate responses with other university departments (e.g., Facilities, Residence Life, Health Services) and external agencies (e.g., Nashville Police Department, Fire Department, EMS) as necessary.Utilize campus maps, floor plans, and other resources to guide officers to specific locations on campus.

Record Keeping and Documentation:

Maintain accurate and detailed logs of all calls received, dispatched units, radio transmissions, and other relevant information in the CAD system and other required logs, adhering to university and department policies.Prepare and process various reports and documentation related to security incidents and activities on campus.Ensure the confidentiality and security of all students, faculty, staff, and incident-related information in accordance with university policies and legal requirements (e.g., FERPA)

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse university population.Maintain a calm and professional demeanor in high-pressure situations, demonstrating empathy and understanding towards students, faculty, and staff.Effectively interact with the public, field personnel, university departments, and external agencies.Exercise active listening skills when dealing with distressed callers, providing reassurance and support.

Technical Proficiency:

Proficiently operate and utilize the department's CAD system, radio consoles, telephone systems (including multi-channel systems), and other communication equipment specific to campus security operations.Understand and utilize campus mapping software, access control systems, and other related security technology.Maintain a working knowledge of Belmont University's policies, procedures, campus layout, key personnel, and emergency protocols.

Other Duties:

Perform other related duties as assigned, supporting the overall mission of Belmont University Campus Security.Assist with training new dispatchers or student workers as required.Maintain a clean and organized work environment within the Communications Center.Serve as a resource for information and directions for the university community.
