Your role and responsibilitiesIn this role, you will contribute to our power distribution system grid resilience research. The focus of this position would be on modeling and development of next generation technologies for distribution grid energy management systems, grid resilience technologies, distribution automation, and the integration and application of distributed energy resource (DER) and inverter-based resources (IBRs) technologies, for the Electrification businesses.You will work as part of the US leg of ABB Research, which shares worldwide research and development responsibility for several important technology areas, including systems and solutions, software & control, connected systems, etc. The work model for the role is: onsite (#Li-Onsite)This role is contributing to the Electrification Service division in Raleigh, NC with some travel. You will be mainly accountable for:• Contribute to distribution grid energy management grid research, including but not limited to distribution grid-related energy management systems, grid resilience technologies, distribution automation, and the integration and application of distributed energy resource (DER) and inverter-based resources (IBRs) technologies• Contribute to the modeling and simulation of the different systems related to medium voltage (MV) distribution grids, microgrids, and other systems related to distribution grid technologies. • Contribute to intelligent distribution resilience systems that use the latest software technologies, including edge computing, embedded systems, IoT technologies, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud computing technologies• Contribute to the development, test, validation, and certification of distribution grid technologies and systems to enable grid power demand management and energy efficiency; Lab testing capabilities experience will be a plus• Generate intellectual properties for ABB and publish results in peer reviewed journals and attend top conferences sponsored by IEEE Power Engineering Society and other related professional societies
Qualifications for the roleMS in Electrical Engineering with 2 years of industry experience preferred; PhD in Electrical Engineering preferred.Distribution grid energy management and grid resilience systems, including microgrid protection and control.Modeling software and platforms, such as Matlab/Simulink, PSCAD, Modelica, Energy Plus, Opal-RT, RTDS, DigSILENT, and PSSEThe application of DERs, IBRs, and DC technologies to the distribution gridSoftware technologies and platforms, including: Python, C++, C#, JavaScript, or other programming languages; Tensorflow, Anaconda, and other Python-based AI platforms; Edge computing devices and technologies; Cloud computing technologies; Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and their application and configuration softwareFamiliar with DNP3, Modbus, IEC61850, OPC UA, and other grid system protocolsExperience collaborating with US government (e.g. DOE), OEM vendors, electric utilities, national laboratories, and academiaGood knowledge of Microgrid technologies, design, and operations; The application of DC technologies at the utility, commercial, and industrial levels; Edge/cloud platformsCandidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
