How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW?

Supervises and coordinates activities of drivers engaged in loading, and transporting compressed and liquid gas cylinders to customers or company locations. Plans routes and schedules drivers, vehicles, deliveries and pick-ups based on driver, company, and customer information. Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules, using knowledge of capacities of trucks by performing the following duties.

Target Annual Salary: $70,300 - $87,000

Responsible for adherence to company policies including safety and the use of personal protective equipment.

Creates a safe work environment by contributing to zero preventable accidents, and by continuous compliance with company safety rules, standard operating procedures and governmental regulations required for the position. 

Investigates customer complaints.  Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists drivers in solving work problems.  

Performs monthly ride-alongs with drivers, providing coaching on Smith Safe Driving principles, DOT paperwork compliance, pre-trip and post-trip inspections, material handling, and customer service relations. Coordinates driver coaching with local safety fleet specialists as needed.

Conducts monthly safety meetings with drivers. Interprets company policies to drivers and enforces safety regulations.

Interprets job orders to drivers, and assigns duties; Assigns deliveries to drivers according to customer needs, current delivery schedule and availability of supplies.  

Ensures delivery schedules are efficient and meet the needs of the customer. Coordinates with other departments to ensure seamless follow through customer service requirements and expectations.  

Manages work hours and approves entries in the timekeeping system. Responsible for maintaining hours within the established budget. Reviews attendance for policy adherence and consistent application of progressive discipline for every associate.

Maintains all required DOT inspection reports and manifests, verifies and releases tickets, and any additional documentation needed in the supervision of drivers.

Maintains and balances shipping papers/manifests; Verifies or prepares records such as routing slips, material requisitions, and job orders.

Processes cylinder orders from branch stores for STO routes; Process cylinder orders for local routes.

Communicates with the Plant Manager to maintain appropriate on-hand stock of required gas cylinders.

Confers with supervisors of other departments to coordinate flow of materials or products.

Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules, using knowledge of capacities of trucks.  

Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists drivers in solving work problems with deliveries and product shortages.

Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of drivers.

Provides leadership direction to all levels of associates in the plan including; positive motivation and performance evaluations, coaching, providing regular feedback through one-on-one meetings, communication of goals, leading regular team meetings and calls.

Provides coaching and corrective action promptly, to ensure that poor performers are identified, documented and improved to acceptable performance, or released.

Trains new employees and cross trains associates to continue deliveries during personnel shortages.  

Maintains a safe driving record and appropriate driver’s license classification while operating company

vehicles and equipment.

The Distribution Manager role ideally holds a CDL license with the proper endorsements to make deliveries and cover routes as needed.

Works safely and meets the requirements of all safety procedures and rules as prescribed by State, Federal, and the Company.

Required Education:
● Bachelor’s Degree preferred or High school degree with five years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Length & Type of Experience:
● Prefer five years’ experience distributing industrial gas/packaged gases, or related industries.
● Recommend a minimum of two years supervisory experience.
● Knowledge of DOT regulations regarding hours of service and the handling of hazardous materials.
● Experience using google systems in the workplace (docs, google sheets, slides) is preferred.
● Ability to operate forklift and maintain appropriate forklift certifications.
● Prefer CDL license and endorsements to make deliveries and cover routes as needed. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA’s):
● Ability to work independently and under some pressure to meet deadlines
● Excellent oral and written communication skills.
● Must be able to work with a wide variety of people with different personalities and backgrounds.
● Must be able to operate in a drug-free workplace.
● Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
