Description
As part of the Storm Protection Plan (SPP), Duke Energy Customer Delivery Florida is in the process of building a Self-Optimizing Grid (SOG). The objectives of the SOG Program are to improve distribution system reliability and limit the number of unserved customers during sustained outages. Implementing the SOG Program requires the deployment of automated switching devices (ASDs) and the completion of necessary capacity upgrades across our distribution system. The feeder automation for the SOG Program is currently being deployed in feeder teams, or SOG Teams (heretofore referred to as Teams).
includes:
• CYME model validation and load allocation for the Team
• Proposing new ASDs to segment the circuits to the SOG Application Guide
• Perform load flow and short circuit analysis – i.e., normal configuration and contingency analysis.
• Propose recommendations to resolve circuit load imbalances, overloads, over/under voltages, VAR needs, etc.
• Identify equipment or capacity upgrade recommendations as warranted by the analysis
• Run Planning and Protection meetings with Zone Planners and DPAC engineers presenting analysis results for each team.
The work involves performing the following key competencies -
• Application of the SOG Application Guide, Rev 1
• Application of the DEF SOG Analysis Process
• CYMDIST Analysis
o Creation and saving of CYME model • Creating and/or Referencing relay settings files for all the proposed ASDs
• Data collection utilizing standard tools (FMS, PI, FLAP, GE DORA, AcSELerator, etc.)

Additional Skills & Qualifications
The SOG Application Guide outlines the objectives of the Self-Optimizing Grid Program, and the parameters for creating new teams. It defines key system components and outlines layout and segmentation guidelines. The layout and segmentation process involves tracing the feeders (using CYMDIST) within a proposed team, applying the layout and segmentation guidelines and locating the key system components.
The DEF SOG Analysis Process details the process used to validate each team and verify it meets the capacity, voltage support and protective device coordination requirements. It defines the study parameters, including functional requirements, inputs, simulations, solution options, and documentation requirements. The Process may be adjusted at the discretion of Asset Management team.
The SOG Application Guide and the DEF SOG Analysis Process documents will be provided to the Engineering Partners upon request.
The primary tool used to perform the planning and engineering analysis tasks referenced above is CYMDIST. It is the main environment for applying the SOG guidelines and study methodology. The Customer Delivery Florida Asset Management team currently uses version 9.0r5. A strong working knowledge of CYMDIST is required to run the simulations (Load Allocation, Load Flow, Load Balancing and Fault Analysis) needed to create and validate SOG schematics. Simulations shall be run for both normal and contingency configurations.
The work requires the proper creation/storage of all study models and the proper documentation of study results. This includes the development of SOG Team diagrams, feeder segmentation tables, summary of study results, recommendations, and creating the relay settings tables using the appropriate Duke Energy standards.
Data collection involves extracting peak load data from Duke Energy’s various databases (FLAP, PI, etc.).
One week of required on-site training will be provided by Duke Energy on the SOG Application guide, the DEF SOG Analysis Process,
