Main Duties:

As a people leader, the lab supervisor has the following responsibilities:

Lead a team of professionals by being motivational, engaging, willing to mentor and support each employee’s growth and career goals.Creates a positive, supportive and inclusive environment for employees to share ideas and provide feedback.Must demonstrate interpersonal skills to gain cooperation with other departments and foster continuous improvements.  Must be flexible with their time depending on business needs, e.g. special projects, etc.Demonstrates excellent organizational and communication skills and be able to address client concerns and employees in a professional manner.  Technical Supervisor oversight for chemistry, coagulation, and blood gas which includes planning, coordination, evaluation, and supervision of all technical and/or operational activitiesMust be able to work closely with the Processing/Phlebotomy Supervisor, 2nd/3rd Shift Technical Supervisor, Clinical Laboratory Manager and Point of Care Manager to ensure teamwork between shifts. Must work closely with DLO QA to ensure compliance with QA program.Responsible for performing duties to operate the lab with the highest quality, safety, integrity, and in an efficient, economical, and businesslike manner are of utmost importance.  Plans, assigns, and directs work in the laboratory as well as mentors and supports employees in their responsibilities in quality control, testing, and ensuring they receive training in skills development and career growth.Oversees the assignment and submission of proficiency testing.Administer and signs off on competency assessments in a timely manner. Ensures quality control and compliance procedures are followed and all documents reviewed as appropriate. Reviews test performance to drive process/project management and prepares and submits required reports to meet established deadlines. Must be flexible and available based on staffing requirements, including weekends, and holidays.Makes independent decisions and able to handle multiple priorities.  Able to organize and lead projects both within the work group and with cross-functional groups. Coordinates and monitors the EHS programs and ensures EHS regulatory standards and safety procedures are followed. Must be able to work closely with the Laboratory Manager, Point of Care staff and DLO QA staff to ensure teamwork and compliance with CAP and QA program.Able to meet physician’s needs by problem solving and resolution of their concerns. Attend all appropriate meetings as needed by DLO and the hospital including, but not limited to, daily huddles, CAP and TJC inspection teams, Patient Care, and Med Quality as required by the hospital.


Required Knowledge: BS degree in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science to meet CLIA standards for a laboratory supervisor. Applicant must demonstrate a broad knowledge of the technical aspects of the tests performed in Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Serology, and Blood Banking.  Applicant should demonstrate a willingness to stay abreast of the latest innovations in test methodologies.


Required Experience: Minimum – 5 years in a clinical laboratory; 2 years supervisory experience preferred, but not required


Special Requirements: MT/MLS(ASCP) or equivalent certification.  

Physical and Mental Requirements:  

The normal performance of duties may require lifting and carrying objects: Objects 1 to 10 pounds are lifted and carried frequently; objects 11 to 25 pounds are lifted and carried occasionally; objects 36 to 50 pounds are seldom lifted or carried and objects over 50 pounds are not to be lifted or carried without assistance. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. May be required to use a wide variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments and apparatuses all of which demand significant manual dexterity.
